Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Ray Smyth:
Thanks to Charlie One & JDC for the answer, Yes it was Northovers, who are or were at Farnborough.
As reported on here recently, I will be in Mojacar from next Monday, in my capacity as
Quality Control Inspector for A.R.S.E., the Alcohol Related Scrutineering Executive.
I may be wearing my " Mappo" style disguise clobber, shorts, sandals, & black socks, but this time
wearing a “Partick Thistle F.C” replica shirt, instead of the “Southampton” shirt.

Kind Regards, Ray Smyth.

You shouldn’t be difficult to spot Ray. Especially if you’ve got

legs like Mappo.please take some pics.We need a good laugh

Regards Charlie

Charlie,
We are still waiting for the results of Ray’s findings regarding the quality control on the booze from his last 2 trips,I think he only goes as far as Wigan pier !

Hope you and Rose are ok,tell her I’ll be up to see her as soon as she’s managed to disconnect the brakes on your mobility scooter

Regards
Richard

Hi Richard, Fortunately, Most alcohol inspections are fault free, hence nothing to report upon my return.
However, These 2 pictures are proof of “Work In Progress”.
Picture 1, Me on the right with Mrs Smyth, and 2 of our long time friends, in an Italian Restaurant
in Munich, 1988.
Picture 2, Me in partial disguise at “Venta de Molina” Restaurant, near Sopalmo, Almeria,Spain, 2009.
The big geezer on the left is Harry Jones, known as “Big H” to some folk, “Big Ugly” to some others.
He is not pretty like you,me,& Mappo. Harry was with me at Robert Baillie in the early 1970s.

Competition Time: Who is the Geezer on the left in Picture 1 ■■ Regards,Ray Smyth.

Ray Smyth:
Hi Charlie, 2 great answers, well done. It was Northovers, and The Shack, Great bacon butties.
Kind Regards, Ray Smyth.

Hi Ray and Charlie. You mentioned Northovers who specialised in Spanish removals. A bit sad really because Jim Northover was a very good friend of a mate of mine and they were both from Liphook. Apparentley Jim was going to relocate to Spain and this was in the late 80’s. They were packing to go and Jim decided to have a short spin on his large BMW motorcycle before it was put on the lorry. Whilst on this jolly an old woman pulled out in front of him in her car and caused his death. They reckoned he was only doing about 30mph when he hit her and went over her bonnet. My mate told me that there wasn’t a scratch on him but he broke his neck. What a pity that just a short ride and someones carelessness cost him his life.
Regards, Nobby.

Ray,

I don’t know but the lady with him is Sue Christie, was he on the way to Amarillo ?

Regards
Richard

Hi Richard, Yes, She is Sue Christie, sat next to her husband, Tony Christie.
I can understand you recognising Tony Christie, but how do you know Sue ?.
I was involved with Tony from 1973, on an "as required " basis, working
Stage Lighting, Spotlight, and occasionally on the sound desk in theatres
and cabaret clubs, mainly in the UK. My wife and I ran Tonys Fan Club
for about 20 years from 1975. Regards, Ray Smyth.

Good afternoon Gentlemen. Rose typing on behalf of Charlie who at the moment

can’t see a thing. Today he had an op on his right eye. He has to keep it covered for

Two days. And because he can’t put his glasses on he’s got me to do it for him.

Hi Nobby Hope you are well and enjoying life. Interesting note about Jim Northover

Charlie’s dad knew him as he lived in Liphook.

Richard. Charlie has twigged on to the scooter scam and has locked up his toolbox.

Me am still on chemotherapy. Two more sessions to go. Fingers crossed.

Regards Rose

and an alter boy, yes i wore a cassock and surplus,
 :unamused:

And black socks and sandals ?..

Sad at first then over a few months it was stripped to a shell, everthing went, including switches, rad cap, grill etc so there must be plenty left to need the spares eh !!! Volvo “T-Ride” did not last long in the UK

Hi All, I’ve just managed to find a pile of old photos I took in the early eighties on trips to Italy I did with my, uncle Phil Dibden (RIP) when he was driving for Transport Services. I need to scan them, hope they may be of some interest and maybe some of you me be able to remind me of some of the locations!

Here is the first, think this was on the Mont Cenis, Phil is on the right.

But of course Dave…that’s where it all started.

Thinking about my earlier question “where did it all go wrong”, i’ve now remembered it was when i met you… :open_mouth:

I recall one day while i was still a warehouse lad, i was with you in the TK in Soton fruit market, and while you were on walkabout

somewhere, a driver came to me and asked… " give us a yard drive " :open_mouth: :open_mouth: …i only moved the wagon a couple of feet, but i was

chuffed to nuts… :sunglasses: :sunglasses: … That was the start of my driving, so it’s your fault…

Hope you and Liz are well, will be in touch soon…

 Hi Everybody.

Yes I have loads of names from the 70’s
I was in truck sales but never succeeded with Barry Jellis @ Barrys Flying Circus, because he had Volvo sickness.
I did know Arthur Kneller and went on a trip to Germany with him once.
I sold Norman Offer a truck.
Here are a few more names…
Jim & Barry Squibb, Transport Services
Ken Lane , Springroad
Ian Wilson , Fareham
Bill Haythorne , Nuttalls
Roy Nicholson, Oakley Self Drive
Tony & Les Gattrell ( lady) from Hythe.
and loads more in Hampshire and surrounding counties.
Thee was not many people in that area with trucks that I did not meet between 77-82, and I even sold some of them trucks.
Yes you probably think I am a sad old ■■■■, but these were good days.

I still have some diesel in my veins.

Are you still about Roland ■■? I am Harvey Scorey another old time truck salesman (about 25 years) in the area.

Here are a few photos of one of my first trips with Phil in his Transport Services Merc 1632 on the Mont Cenis around 1980/81. We were travelling with another Transport Services driver but I cannot remember his name.
