Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Hi Dave, that photo brings back fond memories of shipping out of Portsmouth.
I remember in those days that after booking in, we used to frequent the bar in the terminal
for a few pints before boarding…Happy days, though not quite the same friendly atmosphere of
shipping out of Southampton on Normandy Ferries or Townsend Thoreson…

Don’t want to drop you in it Tone, but I saw you running in and out of Calais at the week-end with live freight…

How could l forget mate, but no one else would have remembered Mapson International Freight Services , after all, it was a bit of a rum outfit and didn’t last long, I blame the Owner, MD, TM, and the driver…all his fault… :unamused:

Fergie47:
A few will remember this no doubt, the old freight office ?

that brings back bad memories of being pulled into the weighbridge and being caught for being overweight! :unamused: Happy days though, loved the run to Rungis, and I swear that we got a ■■■ allowance, plus a beer allowance on those ferries, although my young eager mind may have exaggerated that? Remember sitting with the bloke I was going over with and being in awe of the Compton’s drivers he was chatting with, they were real long distance truckers to me!

Hi Nick, yes mate we did get an allowance of either a carton of ■■■■ or a litre of spirits…
Also free grub and a doggy bag…good days…

By the way, i,ve read your new book and its a great read…I,m just a little disappointed i didn,t get a mention… lol
Hope you,re keeping well, maybe see you at Gaydon this year…

And, if you took your girlfriend with you, you got a 2 berth cabin free, they also got a free meal, plus either the cigarettes, or a bottle… I took lots of girlfriends. !!!..

Yes Fergie, i do remember you as a bit of a womaniser…lol
The only time i can recall taking a female " friend " on a trip to Spain was on Truckline…
Best not say too much though cos you never know who,s listening…

Mappo, I was going to mention you but Jim told me not to as it would go to your head!
I thought I remembered that correctly, thanks guys, yeah forgot about the free food, they really looked after you back then.

Well known haulier…

Spent a few hours with Steve Matthews this afternoon. He has given me some photos to scan and put on here and intends to attend the August Bash.

Spoke to Elkie in the week and he says he will be coming.

Hi Gary,

They have lost touch with her but are now looking at all the info on Mont Cenis on T/Net It takes time up there as wifi is not that good !!

Richard

hi TONY, lovely photo of Mo Bakers transcontinental s, they were awesome mate, and one of the best company’s to work for in soton mate, you worked hard and got a fair wage for what you did, not like some i could mention,i must have known MO for about 30yrs mate even when he worked with Squibby,as for his son Russell that lad was one fantastic operator when it came to setting up a journey for you, and low and behold i was the lucky one to have driven the last transcon into the yard when Mo went to the wall,ok Tony hope you had that bottle of red for me when you were over there, catch up with you later,PS:SEAGULL FERRIES they used to give you a free bottle and ■■■■ free and lunch, those were the day mate and nothing was to much trouble for them. :unamused: :unamused:
