And you lot thought Mappo had retired ? He dropped in this morning on his way to Italy via the Cenis, thought he might be overloaded on the the trailer axle, dunno what he was hauling, he wouldn’t say…and I didn’t ask…
He did ask for 50 Francs running money though, so I guess he’d had a rough night on the ferry and needed some medication…

That’s a Renault 4cv. I drove one briefly in 1969 pulling out of a junction. It had an unpredictable feature called a ‘traffic clutch’ which comprised a normal H-pattern gear-shift with no clutch pedal. When you depressed the brake it automatically declutched, enabling you to select first gear. Once you had that starting gear, the ■■■■ thing was off, ready or not! Talk about ‘mission creep’! Horrible thing. Robert

Loads of computer problems Tone, just recently got them sorted…We’re both fine thanks, usual ache’s and pains, but no one listens !!
Told you, you’re always welcome, plenty of spare rooms, or one of the out houses perhaps if you’re not house trained. Perhaps R & A freight might ship you over, they’ve delivered here before, they know the route ! Monty and his nipper left this morning after a few days R 'n R, we covered a few miles between us, still choking on the diesel fumes !
Lost all our email addresses, so if you, Jimski and anyone else that emailed me from time to time send me a quick note, l can put you’re mail addresses back in my address book…
So, hear from you soon…
Off the first page…

Found this pic A Guy and Foden loading Southampton docks anyone recognise the trucks?Regards Pat
I think the Foden is either Yardleys from Leeds or maybe S W Bowkett from Newport Pat.
My word that brings back memories loading Outspan oranges deffo Yardleys Foden blue and white I believe, Mappo might know about the Guy big J but a lot of them about back then, at least when you loaded outside you could go when you were sheeted up but if you were in the gutter rail sidings in the shed you had to wait till all were loaded before you could pull out to sheet up, cheers Buzzer.
The Big J might be Strattons ? Nobby will know for sure…
TK Dave:
Cast your minds back to the mid 1970s ( younger members ask your parents or grand parents). Anyone recall the following two firms who worked out of Southampton Docks?Arthur Kneller Transportation. Yellow and blue rigid flatbeds (general haulage tramping in a Leyland Terrier or Ford D series four-pot day cab anyone?)
BFC. Had a yard at Eastleigh and the Cunard container contract, although also did general. May have owned AKT (see above). Known without much affection as ‘Barney’s Flying Circus.’
Any recollections, observations and especially pictures welcome. I worked briefly for AKT, (who’s transport manger was an ex-Middle East hand,) and where I learned to rope and sheet.
I worked for Robert Armstrongs Liverpool based in Southampton from 1973 until 1979 when I left to live in Australia.

Hi Dave. The Big “J”, I’m not sure but the Foden is definitely not one of Yardley’s. At that time it would just have been plain blue + signwriting. It was at a much later date that any white was introduced and that was with turquoise.
Regards, Nobby.

Hi Nobby, can’t think whose that Foden could be , but then a lot of the work was subbied out as return loads, so could be anyone from anywhere. Did the Stratton wagons have a headboard or just sign written on the doors ?
