Who said they had to be sodium lamps?

And why not? We do still have gas street lighting in the UK, Malvern is one place that has them.

Well the cost of retrofitting them with new bulbs is not insurmountable, but the cost of installing traffic sensors for every lamp and the wiring involved would run into billions. Plus it would be so stupid it would be laughable. Using your example above it would be like Blackpool illuminations with the ■■■■ things flashing on and off every fews as another vehicle is detected. And [zb] knows what any epileptic would make of it.
Not one of your brighter ideas Harry (pardon the pun).
The best scheme I have heard of is to change from sodium to a whiter light and when that is done then turn most of them off.

And [zb] knows what any epilectic would make of it.![]()
Epileptics are disturbed by flashing lights in close proximity, not a light coming on 400 yards away.
Epileptics aren’t allowed to drive
Would it be possible anywhere on the internet to find more stupidity in just ten words?
merc0447:
Is it Belgium that has every single stretch of motorway lit? Think i read that but ive never been to Belgium.
No, certainly the E40 between Adinkerke and Jabbeke, the most heavily used road by British truck drivers is unlit.

i think i saw it on top gear where jezza claimed that belgiums entire motorway network had lights but as harry points out there are stretches that are unlit, maybe they’re trying to save money

Regardless of the distances involved, with the vehicles spread out it’s still going to be a light show with them flashing on and off constantly as vehicles go past. Epileptics aside, it would be very distracting and annoying for drivers.
Wheel Nut:
I wish they would turn more street lamps off, there is one right outside my bedroom window and it still shines through the heaviest curtains. It is just too far from my reach to cover it, and the glass is too tough for an airgun
Zap it.

a cetain campaigning website springs readily to mind
I agree with other posters that lit sections are much easier on the eye. Visibility & safety is much better.
I do not agree with the idea of turning them off.
Better to change all sodium bulbs to LED, leave them on all night at a fraction of the power requirement and running cost.
Thank you all for your comments, much appreciated. As extrucker rightly points out, the lights are not just being switched off but are also being removed. The HA says that its evidence “indicates” that switching off the lights on 14 stretches of motorways between midnight and 5am since 2009 has not affected road safety…

[/quote]Maybe not, but leaving them on might have done
