Mines never took more than 10 mins and that included pee-ing in a bottle :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

When I reached 45, in 1988, I didn’t renew it because I was working in engineering; when I left that in 2002 I also fancied doing some part-time driving again so a phone call to Swansea confirmed that all I had to do was get a medical. They sent me the forms, I saw the GP (£60 for the medical) and I was driving again within a month. It ran out again in October 2007, but I had retired by then, and will not go back to it anymore.

The first place to go with a question like this, is the people who can really give you the answer - and that’s the licencing people at Swansea. Anything else is just opinions.

Just thought i would bring this up to date. Posted the forms and medical to DVLC. Hadn’t heard anything after about 3 weeks so i gave them a ring. Says they have a backlog so they will send me a letter saying i am entitled to drive while my application is being dealt with. When the letter arrives it has so many clauses i couldn’t imagine anyone letting you drive on the strength of that. So wait another week and ring again. Eventually get passed to the medical section who tell me i haven’t ticked the box stating that i am not profoundly deaf. So, over the telephone mind you, i say well it’s obvious i’m not, you tick it for me. No, thats too simple they have to post it back to me. So it arrived this morning, one tick and back in the post. Now 5 weeks and counting. Good job i don’t need it to earn a living.

Sorry  - WHAT   - CAN… YOU… SHOUT… LOUDER… PLEASE…

Just an update. Still no licence. If you are ever unfortunate enough ever to have dealings with the grandly titled “Drivers Medical Group” at the DVLA be prepared to be patient. Even after you have had a letter telling you that your “entitlement” has been granted, they still think it’s ok to keep you waiting for a couple of weeks to actually get your licence. This must be the biggest bunch of self important prima donnas it has ever been my misfortune to come across. Every time you have to call or correspond with them it seems to add two weeks to the procedure, and why, i had a medical and was 100% so what the hell do they think they are doing.

Ex Haulier, you need to go through the complaint procedure. You may well find after you’ve done that your licence will turn up a few days later.

this is not a dig
but you are an ex haulier who KNEW it all
looking forward to your diary on how the job has CHANGED

old friends customers Gregorys Westfields agency etc
for work

PS get a digi card

You have my sympathy dealing with DVLA medical section I have had to deal with them quite a lot over the last 18 mth have a read

trucknetuk.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=33640

They also say they endeavor to have 80% of licences back with in 90 working days so please dont hold your breath

Animal, you really do have my sympathy. I’ve just read through that other thread and actually feel a little less ■■■■■■ off. I thought that they were just being difficult to wind me up but it seems i got the standard treatment compared to you. What sort of place has a target of getting your licence back in 80% of cases in 90 days ?. If it’s straight forward it should be something like 7. Could you imagine saying to a customer we will try to get 80% of your POD’s back in 90 days. They would die laughing before giving you the boot. Keep persevering and good luck.

Hitch, not sure what you are on about with Westfield, Gregorys and agencys but i can assure you that i have never thought i knew it all. In fact as i get older and know more, i become ever more sure that there is so much more that i don’t know. But then, whatever !.

“Question now, is there anyone in the south west who might need a 50 year old, know it all ex haulier to do a couple of days driving a month ?.”

the quote is from your post

the companies i mentioned are in the south west
and as i said it wasnt a dig
just wait to you get up the road to see the changes in the industry

when / if you get a digi card you will need to carry with you when at work
even if you dont use it . full posts about them somewhere

Actually, already got my digi card. Got it a couple of weeks ago. Got a phone call from the medical group today to say my licence is going in the post tonight. So fingers crossed.

Ex Haulier:
I allowed my class 1 hgv licence to lapse about 10 years ago. Despite all the doom and gloom i read on here i would rather like to have the occasional drive. Anyone know what i would have to do to get my licence back ?. Would i need to start from scratch ?.

UK LICENCES

A ‘B’ (car) licence is valid until age 70.
At 70 the driver is required to have a note from their doctor to say that they are still fit to drive. This is a very minor fitness check and not a full medical like the one for LGV or PCV.

Now, this is interesting -
If you did the ‘B’ (car) test before 1997 the driver got D1 (102 code) and C1 put on their licence.
To retain D1 (102 code) and C1 after the age of 70, a FULL medical must be passed using the D4 form which is the same medical as for LGV & PCV.
B+E entitlement is not affected

INFO SOURCE Drivers already holding entitlement to drive vehicles of category C1 and or D1 and who have passed a car test before 1 January 1997, will only be required to meet the higher medical standards when the licence is next renewed.

For those that passed their ‘B’ (car) test after 1997 and then passed ‘UPGRADES’ things are a little different -

Every upgrade has an expiry date which is usually the date when a medical is due in order to use it.
If the medical is not passed then the upgrade is not valid.
As many have found out, letting the medical lapse does not mean that they have to take a DSA retest if they wish to start using it again - they just have to pass a D4 medical.
B+E entitlement is not affected

I keep mentioning that ‘B+E entitlement is not affected’ and there is a reason for this -
If the B+E was gained as part of ‘upgrading’ by passing any of the ‘+E’ tests then the B+E is not ‘lost’ if the upgade is not valid.

Example -
Pass B in 1999 - no extras given
Pass C in 2001 - now get C1 added
Pass C+E in 2002 - now get C1+E & B+E added

Let medical lapse at any age over 45 - lose right to drive C+E, C, C1 & C1+E but retain B+E.

This has been done this way so that a former +E driver can still tow a large caravan etc in retirement.
