LHD Ford Transcontinentals

I’m into town this morning Saviem and will look to see if they are still here. That single tractor photo may have a third axle.

Saviem:
…It is confusing when one looks at the ■■■■■■■ power plants in the Transcontinental. For they were built by ■■■■■■■■ but to a FoMo Co brief! In effect what you purchased was a simple Big Cam 14 litre, but there were small differences…and I remember the 75 launch

4 rings per piston, not 5.
Slightly altered fuel delivery system
Designated as…
Super 250, 240hp, 710lb.ft torque @ 1400rpm…4x2 34tonne…34 tonne 6x4 drawbar
NTC335E , 272hp, 940lb ft@1300 rpm…4x2 34tonne…34 tonne drawbar
NTC355E 308hp, 950lb ft@1300 rpm…Intercooled…4x2 38 tonne…38 tonne drawbar
NTC355 340hp, 1020lb ft, @1400 rpm…Intercooled…4x2 42 tonne…42, and 44 tonne tractor and drawbar available as 4x2, & 6x4…

Cheerio for now

Indeed the '27 version was a derated NTC335, not an NTC290, as this roadtest proves:

I wonder if the odd specifications were carried over to those engines supplied to Foden? We have already seen Foden brochures advertising the availability of the NTC355 engine.

Some excellent and informative contributions there from Anorak, Saviem et al. Most useful. Cheers! Robert

All 3 tractors are 4x2 Saviem.

Thanks Gazzer!

I wonder what happened to the remaining ones? The Circus Boys do not easily part with nice lorries, but having said that they could be anywhere in Europe by now!

Somewhere in my records I have a file that I made on the Transcontinental, its sales in France, Italy, and Belgium, comparisons with “our” SMs, and TRs, and the major conquests that Ford made, (and the same for Bedford), …At the time those two seemed the major threat, yet it was DAF who really took slices out of our market share, and the FoMoCo, and General Motors threat never really materialised!

Funny old world is it not.

Cheerio for now.

It never panned out for Ford and GM in the European market for maximum-weight lorries, did it? Their efforts were not a complete failure, but their global might was not sufficient to topple the establishment. How long after the launch of the Transcon and TM did the others breathe a sigh of relief?

Danish Ford.

Here is my mate Ove. Somewere in BG/RO on his way home from M/E. He used it down there 3-4 year and hade no big problems during that time with it.

A couple of Swiss examples. Robert

If my memory serves me right it was a name for the parts service but they had to stop it as in one country it meant ■■■■ and Ford had to change it because of the containers on the dock sides had Fomoco had this written on them.I suppose some of you clever buggers will say a lot about this so don’t bother we’ve heard it all before

Tony

There weren’t many containers though

That’s a nice looking outfit! I wonder if that picture was taken when it was working or is that a resto project? Looking at all the stuff in the screen it looks like its working but then it also looks very “clean”! Anyone know anything about it? Its a smart truck whatever its doing!

Heres one.
