I wonder how closely they look or compare your mugshots, Just that if they only give it a cursory glance i could be cheeky and save some money and apply online, giving my passport number,(but is actually same photo) 
anyone tried and succeeded in doing this ?
Failing that itās a new photo costing around Ā£5 +Ā£17 and postage using a D1 form, or use the Post office service

The one from above that i quoted? Just had a look at the online app, and it says it will renew car only as my truck entitlement is due for renewal soon and that i need a d2 form to renew that ā ā ? I canāt see why because all Iām trying to do renew a bloody photo, listening to the DVLAās automated crap apparently i can use a D1 form if a D2 isnāt available, I decided not to continue with the online app because it showed info specific to my licence , ie due for renewal soon , could that mean i have left it too close to the renewal date of 31 jan16 ? or they have changed the goalposts ?

Left it too late. I changed mine with a year to go with no problems. And before anyone mentions anything about getting it done for a healthcheck, I was there last Wednesday for a checkup and had a full eye test far better than a GP does in a LGV medical on Sunday. I donāt need to wait until I have to go for a medical.

Three months before renewal date.
So before you got your renewal info, think Iāve left it to late then mines due early Febuary, might just chance it, you never know !
After thinking about it if i updated the photo using the post office service, they would either renew for another 5yrs or renew just the photo only? if they did the latter it would be a waste of wonga , i as yet have not had any renewal D2/4 pack from DVLA they will probably only send it in early january
Well Iāve gone for the gamble ! I got the need to use form D2 as well , prob just thrown Ā£14 away, but you never know ! Still it says you should get it back in a week so might be a nice Christmas present !

In that case simply changing the photo WILL get a new 5 year expiry date from time of a new issue
Go to a post office which has the facilities = job sorted
I tryed.
Postoffice do not take any Form to send to DVLA
They take a Photo from You,fill a Online Form in and scan your Form. They destroy your Form then and the D4 you can put in the Bin.They not even look at it.They also do not Smart Card,and,as all your Details anywhy at DVLA its hold very Simple

Yes. All done online and it arrived within a week. Was surprisingly easy and quick. I do have a passport so I donāt know if that makes a difference or not.
Well i did the photo update via the post office service and it was a waste of Ā£21.50 and my time, As i got a notice today from DVLA saying, than you for your recent application for a driving licence, that they to advise my lorry entitlement is due to expire & that they will hold onto my photo renewal (and licence) until i either do a medical farce and get ripped off just to continue doing this crap job that was once good The date of the letter is the following day after i applied in the PO
or tell them i donāt wish to renew my lorry entitlement at this time they also sent both D2 and D4 forms
So i can confirm that this certainly does not work any more certainly if your near to the expiry date of your lorry/bus entitlement because DVLA what their ill gotten gains, driving licence tax every 5 years

Glad i didnāt chance the online method, it was that warning of a licence being sent back without my lorry entitlement as my entitlement was nearing itās expiry that made me change my mind
A closer look at the D4 form shows that you have up to 4 months from the date of you medical to return the form, So maybe you can still do this , with the exception that there must be at least 3mths entitlement remaining when you apply to update your photo, or it may be that they have gotten wise up to this loophole and the lost revenue, ? But in my case they did not return my old licence or issue one without CE entitlement on it and didnāt give any reason for this
Well i will be requesting that they do not use the electronic signature as it is nothing like ,due to the dumb design of the pen device in the post offices having a spring loaded tip what a dumb idea and a clusterfk
