Hi Chris, Can’t remember that much about Smethwick, but lets hope were going to find out more, I have just come off the phone with Neil Hobson he was the guy who gave me a job the day i passed my HGV test at NSG Freighters at Parkgate just across the road from Leonard Greens, we are going to get together with some photos sort some out & post them. Neil & his Brother Steven have exported over 5,000 trucks to the caribbean over many years, will also get more info on Greens Cheers Mel
Hi Mel.I seem to remember that name,Neil Hobson from a few years ago.I drove for C.H.Prestons on Woodburn Road Attercliffe in the late 60s,then Naylor and Wagstaffe in Parkway Market,A.E.Evans tankers on Queens Road/Cricket Inn road for 10 years and in 1979 went to Glass Glover at Maltby until 2005.I remember some of the hauliers around Parkgate,J.H.Lord,Seniors and was it Thomas Hughes, there were so many of them in and out of Parkgate and SPT.There was a Leonard Green who worked for Glass Glover/Wincanton Maltby on the agency for a while in the 90s.He would be pushing 60 then so I don’t know if he was the founder or maybe a son of the original Green.
I once got a lift with one of Len Green’s drivers from the Smethwick depot late one friday night from Derby when I worked for Evans, dodgying home.He was a Jamaican bloke and had an “A” series ERF with the ■■■■■■■ and a trailer load of billets. We got on the M1 at South Normanton J28 and at the top of the bank he knocked her out of stick, everything went quiet and I was swaying about on top of sheets, ropes and cans of oil heaped up on the passenger side, thinking about front tyre blowouts as we flew towards Chesterfield about 80 mph. He told me that a Sheffield/Rotherham on nights from Smethwick was £20 so £40 if you did two and Newport was the same.If I’ve got it right then 10 Sheffields or Newports would be £200,seems a lot for the 70s,maybe it was a tenner a load, somebody will know on here I’m sure as I can’t remember what the general haulage rate per hour was in those days.
I’ll look forward to seeing those pictures.
I used to work with Len Green (the son i believe) at Tesco Doncaster. He came to work in a Citroen 2CV and carried a brief case, he didnt look like a driver, more like a teacher. He died if i remember in the mid 90s while still driving for Wincanton/Tesco,it was a bit of a shock, very sudden,a shame because he was a good bloke.
Yes i remember the son Leonard he ran Parkgate aslo Kathleen & Eileen i remember at Rotherham there was another sister Irene , I am not sure but Colin rings a bell another Brother that ran Smethwick, I hope someone will have a picture of number 76 a ERF Sabrina 6 wheeler which my old man used to drive there was 3 of them in the fleet, one of the others was driven by Jonny
two other drivers come to mind , Stan mailia & Gordon Puddicombe, I also remember most of the trucks had names chosen by the driver it was done on white stiff card in colligraphy writing. The old man then went on to a four wheeler with a box on, on contract to GEC at Swinton doing fridges , washers, vacuum cleaners, ect,ect all over UK he left, Greens & did the same work for BG Transport ( another name you may know) based at Maltby on the now Wincanton site, they then moved to Tinsley Tram sheds on end of Weedon Street
Coca-Cola Kid you may be interested in Bob Tucks ‘A Road Transport Heritage 2’ it has a section on Len Greens with pictures of the ERF Sabrina’s.It also explains about the Birmingham link serving GEC in the Midlands.

Hi Mick.
That’s a shame about Len Green,he was a nice bloke.I was at Wincanton Maltby until 2005 and this is the first I’ve heard of his death.
Yes,he did look more like a teacher than a driver with that briefcase.
