We use to go to a coal yard at enerdby there was a haulage firm on the lane down to the coal yard , would that have been enderby transport ? Coal merchant was shaws I think cant remember long narrow yard,
Charlie Handley’s yard was down there (kirk lane),and an old ERF,the one with the oval grille, still resides in a garage down there.i am a friend of the Handley family.in that yard now, there is 2 or 3 Renault Magnum’s operating, and a few other tippers and skip trucks park up.the coal man,was John Shaw,i remember him operating a Commer.i was at school with one of John’s sons.
When I was running out of Croft in the 80s on slabs and blocks . There was a green ERF B series 8wheeler tipper with an old guy driving always had gloves on. which Handley was that.

that would be Charlie.he carried on driving to a good age! his grandson Wayne still works out of Croft,i believe, unless he’s been transferred very recently to Bardon.
I think Croft is not crushing at the moment. Most tonnage is out
of Bardon. I remember some green ERF artics with Handley on them running out of the concrete yard. Also Stuart Handley’s blue Leyland Road Trains. I remember Stuart Handley from Ford and Slater’s.Think he was in sales. That was when it was ECC .The good old days.

Does anyone who drove a Trader think it was like driving a sports car? The seat was close to the floor and your legs stretched straight out in front to the pedals.

Hi
Interesting to see the photo of the Murphy Bros: Foden.
Back in the sixties they ran a fleet of Leyland Beaver artics here in South Wales on the steel out of Port Talbot steelworks and their yard was on North Road on the Bridgend Ind: Est:. Iirc they operated as S.W.H&W.
South Wales Haulage& Warehousing.
Yet more memories !
Regards, Allan
That’s interesting. When I was delivering slabs for Bardon concrete all the London sales were done from West Drayton. if we had a problems that’s where we rang.
S Type Bedford tipping on a Barber Green. Think it’s Bardon gang laying. Wow those were the days no high vis hard hats etc. Remember those tiny round mirror’s.Not much use now.

Think West Drayton was rail rate.Who were you driving for .I think one or two were on that.

Tallis n Cresswell nick. You could call in for a load anytime you fancied. A mate of mine drove for ARC Whitwick n did 2loads a shift down there, would it have been same place?
Yes mate .They had a big tonnage every day .I remember Tallis and Crsswell .I bought the diesel storage tank from them and a wheel nut gun when they finished. Eric was a hard man to deal with.when l worked for Bexton a guy cannot remember his name used to park on the pub next door. He had a S 20 Foden 8wheeler cut down and converted to a tractor unit. It had a bulk trailer.
ARC had 6 of these 680s bar one,Rod Williams my mate had one, doing W Drayton, the poor buga that got the Gardner earned his corn trying to keep up,he wasn’t a happy chap, on the same rate n doing a good few hours extra. Rod said by Friday he was struggling to keep his eyes open.
