Landmarks on the horizon

Yes, sighting of Worsley parish church spire ,Unfortunately now concealed by summertime foliage) reminds me to wake up in anticipation of M6/M60/M61/M62

You definitely cannot see the NEC from the M6 near Wolverhampton!

I’m buggered if I can see the NEC from the M42 going past the off-slip for it! :open_mouth:

You can see the building as you go past the NEC, but you only have a quick glance through the trees and it’s out of view

Grimsby dock tower, can see it from various directions but my favourite is the A46 just before you meet the A18, when i see it I know I’m nearly home.

M180/A180
Passing scunny steel works and then more so at night as the various refinerys at immingham appear.

M4 at night, I always look for the Membury transmitter to come into view for some reason :frowning:

Another good one is the aerial array at Anthorn in north ■■■■■■■■ I used to do a regular collection at Silloth and you can see it clearly from the Wigton - Silloth road. Pretty impressive by day, but at night its extra terrestrial, like summat out of Close Encounters.

Those of you that have been asking me about the NEC building, you can see it from the M42, as you go northbound the second countdown marker A45, just look diagonally across, in the ten o clock position, you can see the building then, you will notice the distinctive shape and next time you’re coming m6south, Wolverhampton area, you can see the same building on the horizon, look towards birmingham city centre, then again look diagonally in the ten o clock position and you can clearly see it on the horizon

I think you mean the 2 big gas holder frames?

Oh, OK, I’ll have to have another look, once I get my dashcam working, the amount of time I’ve spent studying it, I’m going to have to get to the bottom of it!

Stokenchurch comms tower. Celtic mannor. m11 into London

OK, so I’ve done some research into this, it’s not the NEC, the big building is the Hilton Hotel at Birmingham Airport, you can see it from the M6 in the Wednesbury area, its definitely that, I was at Birmingham Airport today, and the white car park building to the left is also visible from Wednesbury

Yes. I set my CC to about 47-48 mph so I can admire the scenery sometimes, always when crossing a long bridge with great views even tough I mostly drive at night - I like shiny lights.

Yes, I remember once, I was on the A19 up to Newcastle and I could see a really bright reflection of a light on the sea, it looked like the sunset, only it one in the morning, I wondered if I was seeing the northern lights for the first time. It turned to be a pipe burning lpg has! Lol
I don’t why they burn off gas in the northern sea, must be a reason…

Driving along the m27 travelling west around the port Solent area .
When.you look to your right theres quite high ground.
On top of which I can only describe as light blue metal work.up there. Reminds me of.ship funnels and a ship.
But surely it can’t Be? Every time I see it in.the distance I wonder what it is

It is a sort of, part of, a ship…
Radar etc development station.
They reproduced the superstructure in ships to test out new radar sets. Cheaper than a real ship, and being on the crest of a ridge there is nothing around to interfere with it.
.
Interesting “back-to-front” Napoleonic era forts built near there too.
.

There are 4 forts, one is an industrial estate where I use to work for Boarhunt Garage. One is, or was deserted, we use to break in to it as kids and wander around, they’re huge with lots to “explore” they have interconnect tunnels between them all, good fun when you’re 13, 14 years old, we got caught a couple of times by the military police so gave it up. One is for radar development and testing, both naval and military, and one is used by the Navy. Not bad for buildings build to defend Portsmouth Harbour from Napoleon .

I remember when Rugby used to look like that, driving past on the M1 near J18 DIRFT turnoff.

There were three large masts, with lots of smaller ones around. ALL dismantled some years ago…
