there are some two faced people on here
if i make a post about someones grammer, spelling and the like, i get shot down in flames, yet, there has been quite a number of posts in reply to the OP that have done exactly that, some from the same people that shoot others down for the very same thing that they have now done
âhave beenâ
No, âhas beenâ. There has been a number of posts, singular. You wouldnât say âthere have been a cat in my gardenâ.
Something was nagging me about this , so I did a bit of Googling and came up with the following:
Subjects and verbs must AGREE with one another in number (singular or plural). Thus, if a subject is singular, its verb must also be singular; if a subject is plural, its verb must also be plural.
However my contention that âpostsâ was the subject was a load of bollox:
A number (subject) of posts (prepositional phrase).
Although the expression âa numberâ is strictly singular, the phrase âa number ofâ is used with plural nouns (as what grammarians call a determiner). The verb should therefore be plural: âA number of people are waiting for the busâ.
So therefore âThere HAVE been a number of postsâ is still grammatically correct.
Hello folks life is too short to quibble over such idiotic and dogmatic ideals lets not forget some people have problems putting pen to paper and others ME i am one of those say this is a forum not a bloody school test , there are many foks out there who are just like me, so lets not be too particular about mistakes

Iâve checked too, and you win on a technicality.
It is singular, and it would be correct to say âthere has been a spate of accidentsâ or âthere was a host of daffodilsâ. However, âa numberâ is, for some reason, a law unto itself, and an exception from that general rule.

Unless the post is totally unreadable to determine what is being said then I can see the point of questioning the poster as to they way it was written but if the post is readable to the point of it being understood then why is there a problem
Many of us, including me, have trouble understanding âtext speakâ but even I can get the jist of what is being said in the end - it just takes me longer to âget itâ
If such a âtext speakâ post does appear then INFORMING the poster in a nice way that many of us find it difficult to read usually results in the poster changing their style of posting.

I think Iâve got it âŚ
He was reading Commercial Motor
He read that L.M. warehousing had gone bust for the second time
He worked for L.M. 2 years ago through an agency
He was sent to Doncaster to pick up a new trailer but when he got there it was not ready as the paint job had not been done
He called the L.M. office who told him to stay put and they would call him in a couple of hours
There were 3 phone calls between him and the L.M. office
The L.M. office told him to abandon the wait and go to Hull where he would be collecting a container loaded with Scania parts bound for China
The container was to be in Ayr for Wednesday Afternoon
He was only supposed to be at L.M. for one week but was there for 3 months
L.M. spent too much money on agency staff
The TM called him to say that he was not wanted any more - probably for the above reason
He then gave the agency a 1 week notice to quit and then went to work directly for L.M. which lasted 6 months.
