The late Trevor Smith’s new lorry- 1962.
These 2 pictures have previously been posted on the “Louis Reece Pictures” thread,
and having found the “Kent Transport” thread only recently, I considered that they
are worthy of showing on this thread. John Freeman is seen here, in and beside 2
very smart Leyland Super Comet lorries. Pictures are courtesy of John, son of
John Freeman of Horsmonden. Regards, Ray Smyth.

My dad had an ex Smiths AEC six wheeler. Thats if it’s the same firm, Smiths sand & ballast from Rochester?
Sorry for the delay in replying.
This is not Smiths of Rochester, I did know the firm very well but this is Farningham Sand and Gravel.

Mitchell and Robertson were fruit hauliers and sold out to R J Wood of Teynham

0Scammell Crusader of Mitchell and Robertson from Branden Farm just outside Marden and Staplehurst (on the site that Staplehurst Transits now occupy) possibly with the late Norman Horsford behind the wheel.

Very interesting photo. This was taken before the vehicle was delivered to us by the dealer, I am sure. It looks fresh out of the paint shop. The driver looks more like me than Norman but its not. Did wonder if it was John Mitchell but I don’t think so. I know this photo was taken before its working life started as Norman cut the downward bend off the exhaust pipe as soon as he got his hands on it as it blew muck up from our dusty yard. I did the same with my Crusader when it came home a few months later.
Lawrence2765. I didn’t know Norman had died. When was that?
Cracking photo of Ginger the Aylwards driver! Who used to come past on the A2 by Northfleet on a regular basis loaded up with Eastwood bricks. The last time I saw him was at Bowaters paper mill, Sittingbourne loading with his mate Lofty another Aylwards driver in the early 60’s. Happy Days!

Some Aylward of Teynham on ebay. Loads more Kent stuff on there if you’re browsing! Robert
