Hi Nipper
I will do that when I next see him, the cafe is still there as far as I know. They got rid of the mobile and built a proper little cafe there.
cheers
John.

Kin ell , yes, i did play in that match, used to be fit then along with Ken(ime a seagull)Bull,Willy Boyd and i think Mark Mathews was on our team then !! Ps, NTS yard used to be at Marshgate in those days, next to Coopers farm services - remember the smell
on a hot day?
Roy from Cricklade - was he a fitter for Les Smith when the yard was on Ferndale Road ,next to Edwards , the fairground people ?
i remember hearing about that match quite a few sore bodies on monday ha ha , somebody mentioned a derek earlier it was derek ford his right hand man was john fulker derek was shop steward in reading used to to luxembourg every week for mountfields lawn mowers
Iwas,nt in sheerness at the time of chipboards mishap but i can remember asking burt how the name came about, and his advice about throwing a chain over the load if i got to load the stuff. Suedehead yes i remember the pipe (overhead) going into a big covered skip. Pong was that bad on some days you could taste it,did we use avon brand tyres back in those days?. Yes roy was the fitter for les smith, he was from cricklade an yes the yard was owned by edwards the fair people. Yes im sure your right about Derek ford daf3300 ,i am pretty sure he was a welshman. Was it ted east that used to run sheerness depot? I can remember ringing up for a load out of sheerness and this bloke(eastys right hand man) would always say ; yeah mate come on in mate; I cant recall his name but something tells me he had a bit of a differant acent. I came to Australia in late 82 and have only been back once for a very short holiday in 90 or 91 .I managed to catch up with burt carvey then i went out to where the old vickers plant used to be (i think) and burt was working for a company out there . I never did find out why jwq fell apart, when i left in late 82 thay had a pretty good fleet, some big flash bangers in there day so what happened? What about the bloke we used to sometimes ring for a load if you were empty in the midlands, i think his name was Alan and he was in Nottingham. Anyway back to work tomorrow for five days if thay have not closed the mine down so i will catch you then Nipper
Yeah I will do that Paul next time I’m back, you are right about him running a pub, after he slit up with his wife he was getting around with a girl from a local pub and they started to run it, didn’t work out it was an old mans pub no music or anything bit of a dead place, they gave it up after a while. The girl passed away a few years ago don’t think he’s bothered with anyone else since. Cheers John.
yes derek ford was the welsh man, putting my anorak on again he had JLC 509V from new , chipboard had JLC508V , i dont think he got done for that, police turned up and we asked them were was the driver , ha ha ha they drove of to the yard , john east was depot manager , ted reynolds was transport manager little irish guy, and alan weston was in nottingham did you ever go to his house , i have seen 6 of us there at once about 5pm so his mum cooked us a meal (happy days)neighbours were not too pleased , and your mention of shorko brought back a nightmare, i had a load slip near watford , went to ring office came back and stood amazed it wasnt that bad when i left it , plod turned up and questions were asked , when help arrived and we had restacked the load a door was found complete with mirror arm, the officers were called over and I asked if this could be used as evidence that I’d been hit. ( it was OAP garages from Ascot ) the driver later said he had a timed delivery, hA ha ha! john Smith had my cards waiting for me until he was told about the door.
nipper you mentioned your first load was coils from sheerness , would that have been over a weekend when most of the fleet was on that job, and did you do the little job from immingham back to donny with coils , i can remember dave henderson with a fiat from reading , he took me up on the sunday as i had left my motor in donny over weekend , dave robbins was there and i think fred ? and someone else ,
Got to go out to work early in the morning but will get back to you with arnsers on friday. I work in the coal industary, 5 on 5 off so wont be near a computer till then, given me plenty to think about though. Thanks Nipper
Some poor quality pics of NLB5V - Shaw Ballard was the driver
Scanned from the tiny negatives
Steve
not bad pics steve were they taken when they were being replaced by the 310,s and i dont remember you with a camera in hand , you could have told the story of llu being bought back to life it took long enough ha ha ha but they did a good job on it still the same flying machine , and the best of it was i wasnt speeding i was taking my time going for a dodgy night out, who was the little guy with beard who drove the wrecker
Yes Paul it was when the old were p.x’d for the R310’s - That was either Bob Aramo or Mick Rolfe that drove the wrecker - probably Bob you are thinking of -
part Italian
Steve
it was bob i was thinking of steve , did he ever smile ?

Steve
HELLO EVERYONE, it’s Terry here aqain, once again a big thankyou to Oddball/Paul for ringing me last saturday night - so ■■■■ good to catch up with you mate. In answer to NIPPERS QUESTION 'what ever happened to JWQ ? Well without wanting to incriminate anyone my take on the demise of the firm is this: LINTON & HURST had the auditors in about 1988 as we were heading to the resession of the early 1990’s and was told to sell off parts of the company that weren’t making profit. This included Jwq and the Calor gas franchise- The head honcho (i certainly wont mention his or any other of the names) at Reading depot (John Smiths replacement) was then given free reign over the firm without the constraints of L & H over him and i feel that the few at the very top has an agenda to ruin Jwq and cream off what they could- i know that the head man slinked off to Spain with his loot- thats my take on it- if anyone else knows different please do correct me! Anyway enough of this buffoonery! time for a few more pics!
The first Two are of B997 Edp, originaly Paul Watsons but i got it when it was a few years old and if i’m honest the next Two years driving that lorry were my Jwq ‘salad days’ - great times!
The third pic is of F119 Lhr, Donuts lorry, the first 1735 on the fleet at Reading and at the time was my ‘wedding car’ from Beech Hill Chapel to our Reception held in Courage brewery Reading. (incidentaly Courages will be closing in June 09- who’d a thought it!)
nice pics terry , oh what happy days , and to answer your question steve ask terry your self he remembers you and he had a 310, not like me had the demo then chose a 3300, he described you perfectly the young thug type fitter cheers mate
