Hi, I’m 55, I passed my class C over 30yrs ago (it was HGV3 back then), but stopped driving HGV’s 16/17yrs ago. I then decided about 6 months ago to renew my licence and take a class c+e crs, passed at the 2nd attempt. Although I’d had experience from many years ago I was still apprehensive about getting behind the wheel after all that time and like you thought about being too old to drive a HGV. But I’ve no regrets at all, get the right instructor and you should be fine.
Hello Mjdhehir
49, whatever are you worried about. You are well below the average age of a driver so forget age and get stuck in mate.
It wont be easy buts its not easy at 19 or 29 or 69
You will need advice all the way so choose the advisor carefully. By advice I mean someone that cares about your personal circumstances. Talk to a few companies and you will know.
Good luck
I had a 55 year old bloke with me when i did my cat c, he passed first time.
I passed my class 2 in December a week before my 52nd birthday
and passed first time.
Mjdhehir:
Am looking for advice is 49 years old too old to learne to drive Hgv
Or am I wasting my money
Passed my C+E today at my first attempt (Thanks to Peter Smythe Training). This is exactly 4 weeks after I passed my Class C (again PST).
I had my 60th birthday last October.
So, 49? I wish …
Go for it.
Alan

It’s going to have to be cos I know he will read this and anything I say may be used against me when I go back for my DCPC.

Very strange
Pm me then. I’m confused.
I am 45 coming 46. and I have done all my theory tests. and have got my assessment drive in april. I don.t think you are to old to learn to drive a HGV.
Maybe not, but he is 54 now.
I passed my Class C a year ago at 52.
I decided to go with an agency after to gain some experience as everybody
seemed to be saying that was the best route into getting a job.
It was slow the first couple of months so be prepared for that.
I found that once a client got to know and trust you that the age thing could
actually be an advantage.
Lots of them said they preferred an older steadier driver, less damage to vehicles etc.
After a year doing agency I have just landed a full time position with a small
local company doing general haulage.
Again, at the interview they were more interested in steady level headed
people than years of experience.
Experience is no good if your a crap driver.
A good attitude and willingness to learn is more important.
I would really recommend this route at it gets you doing a bit of everything.
I’ve driven manuals, autos, splitters, 8 wheel tippers 7.5/18/26 tonners, stinky fish lorrys,Pallet network, local COOP, over nighted all round the country, driven in London and met loads of really good people.
So…Go for it.

“yeah I’ve got 10 years experience…”
“…11 points on my licence and had 12 accidents all serious”
Another 54yr old here! Did my C in November and just done my ADR & C+E this month. Driving for an agency on an ad-hoc hoc basis at the moment and so far I’ve enjoyed it. My plan is to try and get onto tankers (Class 2 first then Class 1 with luck).
