Introduction to a couple of 8-speed gearboxes WITH PICS

Warren T. Claim:
When I was training I found that changing from 4th to 5th in a scania equipped with a range change always gave me a false neutral unless I took it really slow. 3rd to 5th never gave any problems regardless of how fast I changed but it was an 800000km truck…

The way to combat the ‘no mans land’ gear is to activate the switch a couple of seconds before the change is made - it will not change the range until the gearstick goes into neutral.

Driving along in 4th with switch down - drop hand from wheel and put switch up - hand back to wheel - now change from 4th to 5th without touching thw switch as that has been set already - as the gearstick moves through neutral the range will change a lot quicker than doing the switch and the gearchange at almost the same time - I don’t know why the range change is quicker this way perhaps a mechanic on here can - I just know it does.

The reverse of the above can be done for a downchange if going from high to low range.

Thanx dieseldave, your post really helped me get my head round both gearboxes

hi
i know it may be a bit late to add my bit to the gearbox thread …ref the 8 speed box ,i best add that i strip / repair ZF boxes ,but anyway …when i explain to some one ,how an 8 speed works ,i use the bicycle approach…ie the 2 gears at the pedals are the range change ,and the gears at the wheel are your normal gears…so example on your bicycle you start of in 3rd ,pedal your heart out ,get in to 5th ( ok it;s a 10 speed bicycle lol) then you change gear at the peadal whilst putting the main gear back in to 1st ,and your in 6th …hope that small bit helps someone

Hi norb,

I guess that’s a fair analogy and it’s never too late to comment.

My OP was designed for complete novices to LGV driving and was aimed helping them with their first encounter with the eight-speed gearbox commonly found in training vehicles.
