The regulations state that you must have a 45 minute break or the second part of a split driving break immediately after accumulating 4.5 hours driving time.

I’ve always thought it to be a bit of a weird rule but that’s the way it is I’m afraid.

Weird, but that is the way it is written and it is the way infringements are thrown up.

Yep, it’s always seemed daft to me that legally you can wear yourself out carrying heavy sacks around a warehouse for 1¹/₂ hours then drive for 4¹/₂ hours before having to have a break, but if you drive for 4¹/₂ hours then do paperwork for a couple of minutes you’ll get an infringement

I’ve never heard of anyone being killed or maimed by falling asleep whilst driving a biro
