Independent Express

diesel dan:

ist attempt to show pictures

those were amongst the first ones they would probably have been 320 bhp as the 360 bhp had the row of small holes along the underside of the grill

Didn’t they get mixed up with TNT and IPEC. I was never sure about a Tuffnells connection

The people who started Independent nearly all came from IPEC and left there when TNT took it over

There first depot in Northampton was at a village called Old ( where knights of old used to be ) then they had a brand new hub built at brackmills before being taken over by Tuffnells in the late 80s  Remember there night trunkers ~ 331 MANs didnt hang about :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

Wheel Nut:
I think there are some pictures in Pat Haslers old posts. I am sure he drove for them at one time. I seem to remember one at the first Donington Truckracing too

   I think I never

I did used to poke fun at them a lot though, like the time I started a fight between one of them and some other guy by pretending to be one of them … it’s in ‘Old trucking tales’ somewhere.

They drove like mad men and I wasnt that eager to do hard work  Jeeeeeeeezus ! They had a Northampton to Plymouth night truck FFS … round trip

hi pat.
do you remember duracell who dove that 3300 daf for them used to pass us like the wind   my brother did that n,ton plymouth trunk, he had the man that they used to race :exclamation:

Does anybody have any pics of the old Independent Express fleet. They were part of TDG,and sister company to Tuffnells, with a central hub in Northampton. The fleet was pink with black lettering and initially all MAN,from 7.5t,16t to artics. The last vehicles to join were Sherpas and Leyland roadrunners.I have searched net with not one pic found. Can anyone help please??
There was an article in Commercial Motor once.

Some nice pics in IPEC thread

Thought I’d add my pics of the pink ones…They came from local MAN dealer GERALD WHITE, Kislingbury, just off the M1 at j16.

PBD 960Y shunting trailers at Luton depot

960Y at Heathrow

A633 VNV at base camp - Old Northants

A633 VNV and hired unit - Old

A632 and sister A633 VNV - Old

A478 UNV - Old

The only Scania 142 in the fleet. A502 XOJ. It was an owner driver but does anyone know who he was?? I remember riding to Heathrow in this one night and we were still accelerating past 75mph!

Truck racing started at BRAFIELD STADIUM, Northampton. Independant had a go…but not for long!

Hope these are of interest and bring back some memories. Ash

I know,or 99% certain,George Simms from Milton Ernest on A6 North of Bedford, ran the Luton Depot’s MAN artic and rigid. Not sure if he ran other depot’s trucks or not.Last time i saw him was about 20 years ago when Royal Mail put me through my CPC National and George was teaching it !!

Carlisle trunk ?

I had major rows with Swifts because I said that Tebay trunk couldnt be done, I would run out of time at Corley every time on the way back and they would have to send a car and driver to get me, night out money plus the overtime, after two weeks they gave up and changed it to Forton services. … Carlisle would have been impossible

hi pat. ref tebay trunk.
blimey pat, you have been out of the country too long ,the m6 goes all the way to tebay now :exclamation: you could do tebay and aylesford now even in your old f7
cheers micktrick.
