if you are self employed working for many hauliers/ customers there is no problem, you will just send them your invoice.
if you are working for one haulier/ customer, then that haulier/customer needs you to be a limited company because if the inland revenue decides that working for one customer you are not classed as self employed the haulier/customer could be found repsonsable for your tax and national insurance.
check with the hmrc before you start
if you are self employed you need to be able to sort out your own work ie work for whoever you want, if you pay your tax and ni stamp on time working for one customer may never be a problem, what happens is said self employed drivers dont pay taxes on time (cos they’ve spent the money) and then the company is liable for unpaid tax this was also a problem in the construction industry a few years ago
folk get to hung up on this working for 1 person/firm and then spout a load of crap on the subject!

Salty or sweet popcorn? Bitter or lager?

The owner should be stopping your tax (20%)
They should be doing nothing of the sort.
got some good feedback from forum, dont think i’d b interested in nova. Read some of hmrc web pages (plenty to read there) got a no for an acountant, still dont know difference between being self employed and sole trader. Seems like this utr can take anything from 4 weeks to a life time to get sent out

Self employed and Sole Trader are the same thing.
As for the UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference), this will not stop you trading. It will only be used by you when dealing with HM Revenue & Customs (or your agent/accountant). Any of your customers who ask for this, just give them any 10 digit number - they will have no way of verifying it. In fact, just tell them you cannot give it for Data Protection purposes!
When you register Self Employed, it is easier to do it over the phone and you may even be given your UTR over the phone.
you may be better off with a ltd company as then you wont be personaly liable for accident costs

Yes the company will be liable, however the director(s) of the company may also be held accountable if criminal or civil proceedings follow the result of an accident. So becoming a Ltd Co doesn’t fully absolve & ring fence you against accidents. But it is probably better than being a sole trader
if you have an accident the truck/employer will have public liability ins anyway so the driver is just that a driver either s/e, employed, sole trader, ltd co,
if the accident is the drivers fault cant see much in it myself
if you worry to much about what could happen you’d never do owt
