How Much BHP is adequate?

Im not wrong as most say its down to borr stroke there for changing the compresoin ratio but we could start to talk about turbos and blowers if you want.

so what was totally incorrect about what i said?

as i said fella, power = torque times revs and to put the units of power into bhp ---- bhp = torque in lb/ft x rpm then divide by 5252

So where does 5252 come from, is it only a constant when torque is measured in imperial (ft/lb’s) against power in BHP? what fugure do you use when measuring the torque in the metric measurement of kg/m against power in BHP or PS, then what constant would be applicable when meassuring the torque in N/M against power measured in KW’s??

Ross.

5252 is the constant that converts the units to bhp

1 Lb-Ft = 1.35582 Nm
1Nm = 0.7356lb/ft

convert the Nm into lb/ft then do the calculation

we can talk about it if you want, but as i said earlier about too many variables  when i mentioned the longer stroke it wasn’t about going for a higher compression ratio, it was to account for a larger displacement of the individual cylinders of a inline 6 as opposed that of indentical overall displacement of the v8

On the graph’s you’ve posted your 100% correct and it does appear to be a contant in your bhp & ft/lbs figures, I’ve got some dyno sheets in my workshop for various race bikes I’ve owned over the years and it’ll be interesting to compare the 5252 to a high reving 250cc Vtwin two stroke with virtually no torque & my current Ducati 999 which is relatively low rev high torque. I’ve also got some truck dyno charts somewhere which I’ll also compare.

I’ll be back!!!

It’s actually 5250 but it doen’t matter wether it’s an F1 car that makes 750 hp by multiplying zb all torque by loads of rpm or a truck that makes the same power by multiplying loads of torque by zb all rpm.The power figure will be the same.Power is just torque multiplied by engine speed.

I’ve got a graph for my gsxr750 somewhere to compare to ya 999!

I used to help a mate who raced when he was on a Honda rs125 and abit on rs250

ya dont really need big power as i recon its all down tae the gearing and gears available.
for example i drive a 460 running at either 53.5 or 56.5 tons gross 2 trailers and the difference between me and the super truckers wi 495 s hauling 1 trailer at 44.5 tns is next to nothing on fuel sometime i even do better :exclamation:
I may be down tae 30kph for part o the climb loaded an they fly past but over a 550ml day i arrive in the yrd at the end o the day and they are fueling up.
jimmy.

All trucks should have a rolls royce cv12 engine and alison gear box end of simples

Tourqu is the abillity to make things turn there for you could say have a strate 6 16ltr engine put it up against a 13ltr v8 the v8 will mach or out proform the strate 6 as the greater number of pistons will give it better torqu but it also go of the gearing from the gearbox though to the final drive as you csn reduce and in crease tourqu at the wheels via gearing now sleep.

Then why has the R620 (16L) V8 got 3000NM of torque when the F16 750 (16L) “straight six” puts out 3,550NM?

Kinda destroys your point eh??

Ross.

for one there are plenty of variables for a proper comparison, but generally 2 engines of the same size with the same spec but 1 a straight 6 and one a v8, the straight 6 will have higher torque due to the greater leverage on the crack because of the crank’s larger radius due to the longer stroke, but the v8 will rev higher due to the lighter engine internals and as it’s torque x rpm that gives power, it may produce more power

quite right stevieboy the straight 6 will have a longer stroke as a rule

Oh, Yes, as a fan of the Honda Six I have studied the noise from afar  That was the bike that Phil and Michelle rode in 1965

If you’ve worked on an RS250 you should recognise a ‘proper’ GP250 :smiling_imp: taken @ Clearways, Brands Hatch.

This was my last 250, a 2006 TZ with SJK ‘kit’ fitted, I bought in new & sold it in 2010

i’d say 480/520hp on 44 tonne work is more than enough.

i agree, ive got a volvo 480 and i struggled to slow it down, it see’s a hill and starts to laugh at it. anything more than a 500 is a waste and just acting flash.

There was pics on here a while ago of an 8x4 Tipper with a 520 in it (Volvo), I’d imagine it doesn’t move, it just spins the earth round till it gets where it wants!

Ross.

Surely you were a bit big for that 250 Ross lol! Did you race at all? My mate used to race in 125 at the rounds with the bsb then went into bsb he is called Chris Martin.I got to know Dean Ellison through him he used to race 250s.

I drive a MAN 440, it see`s a hill and bursts into tears.

You see I had an 06 reg 430 man that used to enjoy hills, it used to go up Rochester bank at 48mph at 44ton.
