How many driving hours in a 24hr period

first of all, apologies if this has already been discussed.

ok you start work 0800 monday, finish lets say 2100…having done 10 hours driving.

you restart 0600 on the tuesday morning…can you start driving at 0600?

a mate of mine who i would trust 100% with wtd and taco advice says you can’t turn a wheel until 0800 tuesday…ie 10 hours driving in a 24 hour period.

as ever discuss

Once you have had your full or reduced daily rest, your next 24 hrs restarts. The overlap is immaterial.

Personally I would stick 10 mins other work on to do daily checks before driving, but I assume you’re just querying the overlap.

You mate is wrong, you would be free to drive as soon as you’ve completed the daily rest period

The daily driving time is limited to 9 hours which can be extended to 10 hours twice a week, however the “Daily driving time” is defined in (EC) 261/2006 as “accumulated driving time between the end of one daily rest period and the beginning of the following daily rest period or between a daily rest period and a weekly rest period”

In other words the daily driving limit of 9/10 hours is the driving time limit between daily rest periods and not the limit for the 24 hour period.

For example

Start at midinght,15 min daily check, drive 4.5 hours,45 mins break, drive 4.5 hours.
Time now 1000, take 9 hours off, time now 1900.
15 min daily checks,drive 4.5 hours,time now 2345.
Stop( at base for example.)

Total driving time in 24 hours, 13.5 hours
I wouldn’t like to take this card to Spain though, they seem to have too many of their own rules.

Nick
