Just a couple for bonkey.

This one brings back memories ! This was the tow truck based at Old Cliffe Hill Quarry, Markfield in Leicestershire, it moved up here from Hoveringham in 1987, and is photographed outside the Cliffe Hill transport workshops, and was in everyday use until about 1990 when the company owned fleet was pensioned off, and all Tarmac lorries became owner drivers. It was then purchased by one of the Cliffe Hill drivers who restored lorries, and for many years later could be seen from the M1 Junc 22 when traveling North (where the last photo was taken) awaiting restoration, it may still be there, as I have not been there for many years (I’ll find out …)

it’s still there dennis moulding ownes it. it’s not being restored think he bought it for sentimentle values it needs a lot of work tarmac took it off the road because the gearbox faild cracking the gearbox casing and over the winter winter wile waiting for repair the engine froze up cracking the block it’s such a shame would love to see it restored!
before it became a wreaker truck it was a tipper (reg number BJU 689B) run by the late reg hoggar (steve hoggars dad) before being converted the reason it became a Q plate along with a few others was because the log books got lost so the re-registerd them
the reason

If you require the mammoth detail for the cab doors I have a few left
When the workshop at Bray pit was shut down I kept a few, I supplied the ones on Persons Foden.

I was working at Hoveringham Gravels when the wrecker was built. Here’s a few photos to be going on with. The blue and red pictures is the wrecker in it’s present form, for sale on ebay just before christmas. The last I heard it hadn’t reached it’s reserve price. Enjoy!

From another site, this one was originally AFA 1K, built from a damaged tipper, and was stationed at Bellmoor Quarry, Retford, after Tarmac took over in 1986…

Not sure how long they operated it for, but Hoveringham ran a hogging pit at Vicarage Pit Stanton Harcourt (Oxon) during the 70s. Was known as Partridges Pit before that. Alan Rowles used to work there before moving to Smiths Pit across the road. I’ve been told he moved from a Hoveringham Pit in Dorset/Hampshire area before coming to Stanton.

Just come across this one,for the bus enthusiasts.

Here are the original designs for the new office block, from 1964. And also, when constructed in 1965. They were opened by Lord Butler, Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. Note the Mammoth on the conctrete plinth outside the office. This was designed by local artist Kim James.

When Tarmac took over, the Mammoth was presented to Trent Polytectic, Nottingham (Now Nottingham Uni), where it still sits to this very day, outside the Engineering Department.

As we know, the offices have now gone, but were used by Tarmac for years after, I was in their about 7 years ago, and it really was like the Marie Celeste, like going back in time…

Early 1950’s ? No less than 22 lorries line up at Hoveringham Gravel Pit for this early photoshoot.

May be you’ll know some of the faces on here ? A presentation at the quarry, from 1950…

And finally (until I unearth more !..and there will be more) . Foden Tipper URR891 tipping its load of gravel, at the onsite Concrete batching Plant during the construction of Staythorpe Power Station , near Newark in 1950. My Dad worked at Staythorpe, while Mum was on the reception / switchboard at Hoveringham when the new offices opened in 1966…

Absolutely great TARMAC,The chap recieving his present was my wifes uncle bob scrivener. The little boy in the photo was christopher needler
and the man in the pinstripe suit was his father,at that time chairman of hoveringham gravel Harrold Needler. He was also chairman of hull
city football club. The picture of the foden at staythorpe was driven by former lorry driver, fred hodgekiss who sadly is no longer with us.
I have reason to believe the foden in the photo was a show model at earls court hense the fancy bumper bar.

I Have the same pictures of the wrecker being made in the body shop at Hoveringham (Will copy pictures and past ASAP) Curtsey of a fitter JOHN BARKS who later became my boss as fleet engineer of Hoveringham Waste control did you know him■■?

Hi and welcome to the forum capello.JOHN BARKS was a very good friend of mine whilst working at hoveringham.I at that time was an apprentice
and tried to get a transfer from mobile plant into the garage with the intention of being tought by JOHN.
Both him and JOHN STEPHENS put most of the work into the design and build of
the wrecker.I was working at finningley quarry, the last time i saw him,and was most upset when he died.JOHN took many pictures whilst working
at hoverimngham especialy of the wrecks he re-built in the body shop.I contacted him before he died and made arrangements to look at his
photos, but unfortunately never got to see them.

Found these on internet.

Foden, 108 FVO, loads tarmac from one of the companies Coated Plants…

Its not a lorry, but this is an aerial view of Hoveringham’s Asham Wood Quarry , on the Mendips from 1960’s, Redlands Westdown Quarry is on the right, later in 1973 both companies formed a joint venture company called RH Roadstone, (Redland - Hoveringham Roadstone) to quarry both quarries but from one set of crushing plant. Eventually being run by Tarmac, and the being sold to ARC, later Hanson in 1985. The Quarry will reopen again eventually, when reserves at nearby Hanson - Whatley run out… Any one get any more pictures of Asham Wood Quarry or Westdown with Hoveringham lorries in ?

Heres a photo of hoveringham quarry in the 1950s.At that time they were using locos. My dad told me that one of the fitters at that time fitted
a foden two stroke engine in one of the locos, and you could hear it all round bleasby and surrounding district.
