Big Truck:
Why is it ALWAYS England/England and England that is a crap place to live and tars the rest of the UK with the same brush

You might find that life in Scotland/Wales and defo here in Northern Ireland is IMHO better than England :exclamation: :exclamation: :sunglasses:

Gotta agree with this point, been following this thread and while never having lived abroad(did have a two week holiday around toronto 10 years ago) i would say 90% of britain is still great, its the cities that are ■■■■■■ up.As a regular driver into London,Brum,Manc etc, they no longer remind me of Britain.I live in a beautiful part of Scotland alongside all my family,i can walk down the street and into a pub and meet friends, relations, aquaintances i or my family have known for generations,my doctor speaks the same language, wont ask for a healthcare insurance and my dentist will charge the grand sum of £6.50 for a filling next friday.I know i’m living in a society where if i fall (metaphorically),there is a safety net (the welfare state) to catch and help care for me,i don’t get that impression from my very limited knowledge of USA.Just my tuppence worth

There is a lot of truth I’m from London and love london but it is sad what has happened in the big city’s. I know people say the big city’s have always had immigrants and I’m a pretty much live and let live type but the saturation of entire areas with immigration isn’t right
To be fair the big Canadian city’s seem to be catching up in this respect. You can’t blame someone who’s living in a shanty town living on pennies a day for getting out if they can.

Big Truck,

We are just discussing various points. Not tarring anyone, with the same brush. Infact I seem to recall that tarring and feathering was more common where you come from ?

So your point is ■■ That the Falls Road is a lovely place to live ?

A few of us were saying to pat that things here, (especially in London) have changed that’s all.

Clearly as Northern Island was not mentioned, it was not even part of this discussion… till you made it part.

I wonder why you are even looking at the ex-pat area ?

Maybe you could enlighten us ?

Not even worth replying to that,
YOU are obviously riding on a Dinosaur somewhere :exclamation: :exclamation: :unamused:

Just because I live here now doesn’t mean I shut myself off from the UK, I am in constant contact with friends and relatives every day and visit quite often. I know exactly how much better off the people of the UK are compared to those who live and work in the USA, thats all. Believe me may friends, if you think life in Bimingham, Cardiff, Glasgow or any other British city is bad try living in a big city here.

The difference nowadays is that years ago as the Irish and Poles (for instance) came to Britain for new lives they usually lived in slums, but their offspring were proud to embrace the country of their birth (knowing that the fatherland wouldn’t want them and did nothing for their parents). My Dad was Irish but I never went 'round speaking in an Irish accent as I grew up, and I knew my Dad got everything he ever had of value from Britain.

On the other hand the influx from Indian sub continent are still living is slums three generations down the line, and in my town are still proud to call themselves Pakistani/Bangladeshi/Mirpuris, although they have never seen their great grandparents homeland!
Try listening to the women in FULL BURKAS at my local Tesco swearing at their kids in my accent, and you will realise that some people do not want to integrate… just colonise.

That’s very true. I’m the same as you my dads Irish. But I’m English.
Back in England I worked a lot in east London and you got people there who have lived there 30 years who can’t speak English.
The government and council are wrong putting up signs and making forms avaluble in loads of languages.
The national language is English so anything official should be in that language alone.

Seems a lot of the yoofs darn sarf don’t even speak Cockney, but aspire to speak in the ridiculous, almost Jamaican patois where they don’t even pronounce ‘th’ and it simply isn’t corrected. I’m not a language snob, I have a strongish Yorkshire accent, also when people take the pee out of asians saying ‘innit’ all the time, they are bang on as could be proved with a visit to Bradford where I live.

Unique moment on ExPats , but I totally hear where you’re coming from Mick . Just try flying St Georges flag on your house and see what happens , not quite the same patriotic effect that it would have over here I guess , INNIT :unamused:

Flat,

I think we are all agreed, that we are agreed.

Our Local pub (West London) had a visit from 2 gentlemen, who own the next-door but one ‘shisha bar’ (hubble bubble smoking pipe den) They mentioned that they found the cross of St George flags, that were being displayed, offensive (It was Jubilee Weekend!!!)

They DEMANDED, they be taken down, or said they would report the pub to the council.

Well the lads in the pub had a chat, and we did decided to take them down…

but, only after the 4 NEW 20ft flags had arrived…

Strangely, said Shisha bar then had multiple visits about various health violations and it was shut down…

Also Pat, I lived in the States for just over a year, and can fully understand what you say, re healthcare, Holidays etc.

I Just wondered how often you had been here, clearly you have your finger on the pulse. Iwas just asking… no disrespect meant. The world is certainly changing in lots of areas…

Re the flag thing. That’s one thing I like about America you see the flag everywhere and the whole your in America so your American no matter where your heratige is from.

Blimey it’s obvious that if you sell out the wealth creating industry of a zb great big country like America to the foreign competition then it’s obvious that it will fall a lot harder than here where the same thing is happening but on an obviously smaller/slower scale. :bulb:

The relevant comparison would be the comparison of Detroit and the surrounding states of 1967 with 2013 for example.Together with general income levels and living standards which that level of industrialisation brought to the place as a whole. The issue of health care and so called welfare is just bs because in most cases it’s all about being able to earn enough money to pay for private health care and live on savings betwen jobs and in retirement. It’s all got to be paid for one way or another wether it’s the socialist Brit way or the private US way and when the money isn’t there in wages to pay for it either through taxes or insurance etc it ain’t there.

There’s still actually more than one flag in America if you look for it.It’s just that they don’t like that one as much in places like NY or Chigaco as they do in places like Birmingham and that doesn’t mean Birmingham West Midlands. :smiling_imp:

Look on the bright side at least you’d have been on the winning side if we’d have been arguing about it in the early 1860’s. :open_mouth: :smiling_imp:

I’m on my own side. I just find the further south I go the better the class of moron you get whatever side there on.
