I’m quite happy with my 65. Bigger isn’t always better (he says, hoping people will believe that BS, LOL).
We’ve got a 100 on the way

To be honest I’m thinking the same as you, the 65 or the 63 as I’ve got is an ideal compromise on an 8 wheeler with regard to payload, Iv got the highline cab and heavy duty flat and can still get 10.5 ton on.
A company up here has just put an 85 on a daf with a wee cab, wee engine and a normal flat, I was speaking to the driver yesterday and he can only get 7 ton on which for general haulage is pish.
Don’t get me wrong I think that swain motor is a crackin looking piece of kit but unless it has a specific job that doesn’t require much payload it cant be versatile enough for general haulage, more like a mobile crane really.
My opinion for what it’s worth is once you get upwards of 85 you should really be looking at a artic and even if access is an issue you can think about a short trailer or an even shorter body attached to the fifth wheel.

Exactly. The swains one was built for O’hagan’s and was cabin spec, as I believe they had an Elliotts contract at the time. I’ve heard that it carries anywhere between 6 and 7.5t depending on who you speak to.
Mine carries 9.5 as it was a stretch.
That Daf with the 85 wouldn’t happen to be Weston Transport would it?

Hi Alfa man, I think you’re right my 85 is on a tractor unit I drive for a generator company so that’s all I move. We have a number trailers ranging from 23’ up to 40’ and also a stillage bar on the tractor unit that we raise to take generators into tight areas on site as seen in pictures above.

Yeh, a decent enough looking motor and I know weston do a lot of cabins and welfare units etc so it was probably specked for that type of work.

That set up is perfect for your type of work but I also think it would work well for a general haulage operation if you using a really big crane.
About 80% of my work is empty or part loaded containers so when my motor was up for renewal we looked at an artic with a bigger crane and one of those multi function skelly’s that split, but in the end we decided we just didn’t do enough 40 footers or longer cargo so we stuck with the w&d.

Indeed. It was built by the same crowd that did mine. It was supposed to be for their Coventry depot but they had a change of plan. I know the guy who runs Coventry well. I don’t think he was best pleased about not getting it.

Was it Central Hydraulic Loaders in Tamworth that built yours ? I was in there this week and spotted one of your sitting.
It was the first time I’ve been in there and I was quite impressed with the place, the guy that done my repair was spot on and I got the impression what he didn’t know about PM wasn’t worth knowing
Also, was speaking to the weston driver again about his 85 and he says he’s only got it temporary and he thinks it’s going back to Coventry, so your pal might be getting it after all.

It was indeed. They are a fair bunch. I assume you dealt with Alan or Derek then. Both fountains of knowledge.
Our next one is in there at the moment. Shouldn’t be far off done now. 6 wheel rear mount.
A few more of mine:
A bit of a nightmare to tie down without marking the paint.
A tight squeeze in the back of a wood shop near Alston.
Moving empties about in a yard in Airdrie.
All ready for down the road on Monday, first time fully freighted for a long while.
And finally a bit of sun bathing last year in Glencoe.
