Turning 45 next month and the DVLA have just sent me a D4 medical form. My GP has quoted £120 for a medical seems very expensive. Heard about websites where you can get medicals done for around £50 to £60, and I remember seeing in truck stop free papers adverts for them but dont get to truckstops very often so can’t remember website address or phone numbers. Any one got any recommendations for medicals in the Leicestershire or East Midlands region?
Hope someone can help![]()

Thanks for reading.
Go to your own Doctor and pay the fee,at least he /she knows you and the medical will keep your records up to date and not binned by the Doctor, who you may never see again, once you have paid your fee.
Try your employer, my doc quoted £170, my employer got it done for £50 and then paid it
Why not pay the money to see your own doc and get a proper medical, you only have one life!.Chances are you’re like me and never seen a doctor since you were 21,I am fit and healthy but during my medical at 45 my doctor was very thorough and found I have a hiatus hernia which explained why I was ill after eating the wrong type of food.I doubt if some fly by night foreign doctor rattling as many blokes through the door in a day would take the time for proper examinations
Who says you are skimp and go to go to a fly by night doc. If I’m paying an authorised AME doctor £135 for a class 1 then the guys who are being charge £170 for an HGV medical are definitely having their ■■■■■■■ squeezed (literally?). Just find a cheaper GP who isn’t so greedy. They have to be out there.
Go on holiday to France look up one of the specific doctors that do LGV medicals, (he needs to be able to read and write English so makes it a bit more difficult) set fee 33 euros about 24 quid

so after you pay for two(all hols are based on minimum two sharing)that will cost you £10024 for medical plus spending money. he wants a cheap medical not a holiday
Ah that is the catch [GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES] seriously though I did use this method but I do live in France [GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]
Update!!!
Just had my medical with Derby Medicals Direct for £39 at their Leicester branch. Great service, would recommend, did it all in 10 minutes and form is ready to send off to DVLA, now the money I saved is being invested in an MOT for the car.

Don’t forget to check the form before sending it off, it’s surprising how many people don’t
I don’t mean any disrespect to the doctor you saw but doctors make mistakes just like the rest of us
Definitely check form. My doc messed it up so I now have to wait another two weeks as dvla say my eyesight isn’t up to scratch. Got an optician to do the form they sent. I have perfect vision after her tests. I think he just got the numbers wrong. In the mean time I’m not allowed to drive a hgv until they get the opticians report back.
Next time I’ll go to somebody who has a clue. After visiting the optician first.
The results they said I’d given, I probably couldn’t have seen the truck let alone read its number plate at 20m.

Could I ask how much optician charges please ?
Is it a HGV specific test or the full mashing, and would I get it free for being over 60 ?
Thanks,
Jim
I went to Tesco, told them what it was for and gave them all the paperwork the DVLA sent me, they did it for free. JFC999 I’ll post back on here if the DVLA are happy with it, I went to Tesco Extra in Chesterfield. I suppose they do it for free now then when I start to need glasses that’s when they make the money.

Ahhh… Tesco is everybody’s friend !
Thanks for the info mate , Asda has just opened an opticians in Harrogate , if I tell em Tesco do it for free and see what happens.
I’m just being nosey really , I don’t need a Med. until 2018 by which time the rules will probably have changed.
Thanks
Jim
Vision ok now, free Tesco test was fine and licence is in the post. Bit of a relief. Barely used license for five years and just as I’m starting doing interviews for driving jobs getting a letter saying its temporarily revoked wasn’t amusing.
