Henley transport co ltd remember them?

Another nice line up photo Chris-are my eyes playing tricks on me or is the D series sporting one of Fords own brand brush guards?

there was some sort of additional bumper bar on the d series but i hope cav551 can shed some light on this,i also think this lorry sometimes used to carry a demountable box body which ended up in the old hop pocket lane yard next to the fence by the railway line

A couple of cuttings I came across

Hello Chris,

Sorry I only just recall seing the D series once and nothing registers about it. The two or three vehicles nearest the camera must have been very nearly new if the picture is dated 1970. The Mercury is VKR 540J and the ERF is WKR***J. In the other photo of the Tamplin tipper, this was still about on Cider, but like the demounted box at Paddock Wood, the Scammel four in line was derelict behind the workshop and I was given the job of cutting it up for scrap.

erf b series bkn 778t (fleet no 14) this photo was taken in bristol during the afternoon whilst the driver had gone home.
for a period of time the company employed a bristol based driver call alan mizen.
a trailer would be loaded up in the paddock wood area in the afternoon normally for bristol wholesale market, cardiff wholesale market, what was gateways chepstow back over the bridge to gateways at bristol and sometimes onto gateways at yeovil, and then ran down to bristol by a night man who would do a straight vehicle swap (the reason for this was that there was no need for the vehicle to bunker diesel as there was always enough for the trip)
alan would do all the deliveries then reload the trailer at drg in fishponds, bristol.after the night swap over when the load came back to paddock wood the dayman would tip the reload from drg at proctor & gamble in west thurrock (the load always went there) and then reload from proctor & gamble for a delivery into kent, sussex or surrey.
this swap over happened 5 nights a week from sunday night through to thursday night.
note the fuel tank (ex aec)

Here is a picture of the first MAN in the fleet, FYJ870V, (fleet no 25). MAN’s were rare in Kent during this time as there was no main dealer. I think Portways at Faversham were service agents. FYJ870V was unusual in being registered in the Brighton/East Sussex area. Was this something to do with Jempsons of Rye?

C51JFW turned up as a shunter at A Wood’s yard at Detling in1996. I think it was used on the road, not as a yard shunter. If I remember it was painted white with the old A Wood livery (as opposed to the Albert Fisher livery). When Coolchain took over A Wood in 2000, C51JFW ended up back at Paddock Wood as a shunter.

lawrence2765:
c51 jfw an man 22.321 tractor unit (fleet no 51) shown here coupled to a pacton tandem axle trailer and an insuliner body made by boalloy powered by a petter refridgeration unit.
the unit was allocated brand new to paul newton a spelmonden (goudhurst) driver one of pauls regular runs was western international fruit market in west london and then down to waitrose at bracknell for 6am,which necessitated the produce be kept chilled the normal temperature would be +5 degrees for supermarket work.
the photo shows the lorry parked in hop pocket lane in paddock wood,to the rear of the trailer in the distance the sign for the hop pocket pub can be seen.
also seen in the photo is the rha sticker in the windscreen, jack henley was a very staunch rha man, also can be seen is the ta sticker which showed that henley transport co ltd were members of the transport association.0

this was indeed the first man tractor unit to join the fleet being a 280 model.
jack was urged to try man after reccomendations from colin ashby of boughton monchelsea and jonathan jempson (colin ashbys cousin) of john jempson & son of rye

b180 ykk (fleet no 18) seen here pulling a pacton chassis with bodywork by boalloy of congleton and a petter fridge unit.
the insuliner trailers were found to be extremely useful on market and supermarket distribution and off course it kept the goods chilled which was normally ran at plus 5 degrees.
seen here travelling home on the m4 driven by regular driver brian penfold who had the oufit from new, brian was a great bloke and a very good driver, one thing that i will always remember with brian is that whenever he was manouvering in the yard no matter how tricky the situation he was in if he saw you he would be more interested in putting his hand up or dropping the window to say hello and make sure you was ok

Some of the tautliners have nameboards on the front with FHR on-was this another customer?

Here is another MAN, FKP250Y. This appears to be fleet number 25, what happened to FYJ870V, was it renumbered?

the first two man tractor units only stayed with the company a short while fyj 860v was replaced by fkp 250y and then fkp 250y was replaced by a130 rkr a 3 axle tractor unit running at 38 tonnes.
a130 rkr was pitched against a 3 axle erf c series and a 3 axle seddon atkinson 401 to see which one of the three would be best for 38 ton operations the man won.
all of these man tractor units were allocated brand new to spelmonden driver the late richard harris

Hi Mark, Went passed the Coolchain depot on Sunday at Teynham. What’s with the Blue and White Tractor units with Coolchain logo ? Scania and Volvo I spotted. Are they subbies ? Also are Edwards a permanent subbie and do their drivers and tractor units ever get to go home ! ?

The blue & white trucks you see in the yard are ex Bawdsey Haulage vehicles. Fowler Welch bought out Bawdsey some time ago to get a foot in the container business. Unfortunatly things did’nt go quite as planned and the container division was pretty soon wound up. We still do a fair few containers but nowhere near as many as was planned. As for Edwards Transport, yes they probebly are our biggest subbie with trucks in Teynham every day. They mainly do runs to the midlands & the north, they have excellent tackle and provide a good service ( hence the amount of work they get ). Although their based in Shropshire they do have an operating centre in Snodland and i believe they may have a couple of drivers who live localy.

Many thanks Mark, that clears it all up. Yes, agree that Edwards are impressive and always seem well turned out.Did not know they had a base in Snodland too.

h780 fko seen travelling back home on the m4,seen here pulling a gray adams 26 pallet fridge van with rear steer axles.
gray adams was considered to be the rolls royce of fridge bodywork and the company standardised on these trailers,a few had compartments in so the trailer could be split as two fridges one running at plus 5 degrees for chilled produce and the other running 8 to 10 degrees warmer for bananas.
george waghorn is seen behind the wheel of his regular vehicle here, george was good as gold he would do anything to help anyone, one of the best!

Did H780 get repainted in WRM livery?. I know H380 did as it came to Teynham and was driven by the late Terry Mount. If i remember rightly they had the SAMT gearbox in them. I think we also had one reg number H76 and an M reg one too. I think it was M82.

hello mark,
i dont know what got painted into wrm livery as i wasnt interested in wrm at all and left just before the take over.
all of the mans from f reg onwards had the samt gearbox (with the exception of f110 gkl) h380 fkk was an ex rochdale motor,h76 gko was an ex hersden motor and the m reg would have been m82 nko and had a sister m83 nko which were both in the white livery pulling mack liveried triaxle fridge trailers both originally based in paddock wood and allocated to martin kemp and dave heskett, they were both about the last new lorries jack henley brought.

bubbleman.
the last 3 photo posts i have put on this thread being erf bkn 778t,man b180 ykk and another man h780 fko i would like to thank bubbleman for giving me his kind permission in allowing me to use these photos from his personal collection.
bubbleman man used to drive for novacold (an old tdg company) and i used to load the vehicles back to the bristol area from paddock wood depot,i started communicating with marcus a few years back by phone, letter and nowadays by email but i couldnt place him, then i saw a photograph of him last year on trucknet and recognised him straight awaymarcus you havent changed from all those years ago!good luck to ya.

Mark & Chris

H780 remained in Henley’s livery. It lasted into Coolchain days and disappeared from Paddock Wood in January 1999.
H76 was painted in WRM livery. This was a Teynham vehicle and disappeared in January 1999.
During this time a new fleet of S reg MAN’s and Leyland Daf’s were being delivered, and anything older than L reg of Henley’s (with the exception of E330 & F511) were being taken out of service.
M82 & M83 were both white. Both of these were transferred to Rochdale in 1999 and were later parked up with gearbox problems.
M84 was painted in WRM livery and was a Teynham vehicle. It transferred to Paddock Wood in July 1999. It lasted until June 2000.

Hope this helps
