Put this on another thread a few weeks ago. Saw it South Island NZ earlier this year. I was told it still works for about three months every year. Not sure about the drivetrain. The only info I could get was it had a " big ■■■■■■■■

No they were Leyland axles, same as they used on the Crusaders.
In Australia the Crusaders were offered with the small Leyland hubs (as used in Albions etc) OR the Maudsley rear axles.
Never had the big Leyland hub as used in the Beavers, Hippos etc.

0Nothing choppy about the suspension on this motor, Plus it had the Eaton Twin Splitter Box, No problems at all, Regards Larry.
but it got daf in it i would say it was out dated at this time witch is a shame the early 6x2 was the old scammell chassis its such a shame what happend to BL
Very tidy, I noticed the door handle has been repaired the pop rivets are visable, both our F regs had the same repair, certainly cheaper than the new bits, Regards Larry.

Evening Gentlemen, well this "new book " thing sounds very dubious! A bit like all these "johnny come lately " poor quality journalistic types trying to gain cheap knowledge to me!86 , I owned 12 T45 TL12s, and they were great. Performed inside budget, and made me money. By 91 I had owned and operated over200 Leyland products, and all ran inside budget, (and many Swedish products did not). Then of course our stupid politicians had “given away” “our”, (and I speak as a taxpayer), company to those inebriates at DAF, …and the rest is history…it is said “you get the politicians you deserve”… are we really that stupid!!!
Cheerio for now.
Thanks for your hearty sentiments and best wishes towards my plight!
Well dubious it is not… factual it most certainly is. The publishing contract has already been signed and some very key names have already stepped up the oche as t`wer including…
Dr Tom Karen (Ogle Design)
Martin Haines (former LML PR Manager
Andrew Goundry (former LML design engineer and plant director for ADL)
Bill Lowe (pending)
Longs of Leeds
Swains
I may close by adding the many many people who have contacted myself (and its running into the hundreds) you have been the only one to be negative - such a shame too as your running & operating experience of T45 could have been so so valuable!
Evening Mike AROnline,…I am not a negative person, but having spent over 50 years in a “mature” industry, perhaps have a touch of the cynic about me!
Ypur list does not seem so great to me, I can, (as most readers to this thread will), instantly think of more people with “real” volume experience of the product.
Not just the designers, but how about “real” volume users, how about the Dealers that sold and supported them, how about the poor s… , working for Leyland that found themselves “in the middle” betwixt the inflexible (and totally out of touch management), and the poor so, and so`s that had their own money…or credit invested in them.
Maybe I would be less sceptical about “your” journalistic ability, had I any knowlege of your background. Certainly having many years experience of working with “lorry” journalists world wide, I have scant regard, (reading what is published), to the efforts of "contemporary "journalists, but perhaps I am not alone in this.
Incidentally, my old friend Glyn Swain did not operate any real volume of T45s, (and at the time we used to discuss the failings in operation closely), and neither did Longs, (certainly far less than I personally did), and there are more salient Managerial Personalities in the old Leyland empire than those that you cite, as “being on board” . But the Ogle people would have something to contribute about “conceptualisation”…spare me the words of Marketing speak!!! Do these goons even understand what it is like to “live” with a lorry?
I would surmise that your research has centred around correlation of the advertising material of Leyland, and contacting operators thus featured. Perhaps I should send you some of their less accurate examples!!
Wow, the “publishing contract has been signed”…I`m sad, not that you have a publishing contract, but there are many contributors to these threads, whose life experiences SHOULD be published, because they are of real relevance to the history of this wonderful industry…and perhaps if you become agitated at my “negativity”, try reading some of my friend the late Pat Kennetts books on individual marques, and realise that perhaps your efforts need a little more fine tuning, May I humbly suggest in the area of research!
Well adieu, from your “negative” friend, who actually sees each glass as more than half full…and if its Bollinger within it…well it is!!
Cheerio for now.

It sounds exciting, given that you have Dr. Karen, Mr Haines and Mr. Goundry contributing. We can read any number of operator/driver experiences on this forum, but having access to the knowledge of the people who planned and designed the machines is an intriguing prospect. Questions I would like answered are:
Why was the Spicer gearbox chosen instead of Fuller?
Why was a ZF synchromesh ‘box not offered from the start?
Why was the sleeper version’s introduction delayed?
Why was the Interstate version not introduced earlier?
Why was the E400 ■■■■■■■ not available from the start?
Why was only one trim level available, with no luxury option?
Why were they such rotboxes?
Why was air suspension not available from the start?
All of the above things, or their equivalents, could be had from Leyalnd’s competitors in 1980. Having spoken to a few Leyland engineers, during and after the T45’s production run, I found them to be very agreeable people and, in many cases, fiercely intelligent- in my humble opinion. Why did the product not do them justice?
Sounds like a another jolly good book telling how good the British were, and didn’t we have a jolly good time while we had our head buried in the sand. I don’t think it’ll find a place on my book shelf.
Jeff
Maybe I have missed some deleted posts or prior confrontations but I can’t understand your negativity towards the OP ?

Well I was forewarned about frosty remarks and comments on here - but hey ho!
My back ground is no consequence really but as you insist - I shall enlighten you. Held an LGV for a good few years now and worked with RGF Logistics - Ray C Smith and a lengthy stint with C-■■■■. Former engine builder before that and subsequently got into car then PSV sales. Got involved with an automotive resource and history site, blogs turned into writing and road tests for Commercial Motor and Material handling world, Car Mechanics magazine, Diesel Car Magazine. Keep my foot in wheel turning by doing the CPC to keep things all legal.
The book will cover the highs and lows - so no, its not a rose tinted view by a long chalk. It will cover all versions from C44 through to C40 and everyone has an opportunity to throw in their tuppence worth - anyone with a tangible experience.
With regards to your remarks about other contributors being published - hit the publishers with ideas rather than pouring hot oil in a blog. You sound like a man with experience and possibly worthy of some space in a chapter - dare I say it… a wasted fountain of experience and knowledge. So perhaps your vented spleen would be better suited by contributing rather than seeming hostile and oddly negative towards myself who is simply looking to build a valid and fair appraisal of the truck in order to paint a realistic picture.
Again… I reiterate - Drivers / Dealers / Operators / Fitters / Designers / Parts Managers / even Leyland workers have gladly offered to share their thoughts and views.

GentlemenI co edit the UK motor based website aronline.co.uk and am currently working on a new book with working title “Leyland T45 - The Complete Story”
Some truly big names from yesteryear are on board including Ogle designs Dr Tom Karen, some top ex Leyland design & marketing men & notable hauliers.
I am desperately looking for anecdotes, driver experiences and spec info (especially for TL12) for any Leyland product from Roadrunner to Roadtrain. In fact, anything T45.
Any help thats used or printed well get a mention in a really good quality book telling a story thats been criminally untold in full. Please contact me via the email address below:
Many thanks
Mike Humble
This was one of three at the time bought new. A858, A859 and A860 ETO. All had TL engines and splitter boxes and were very comfy to ride in. They worked hard and pulled really well and did everything the others did but only with more character.
Would be interesting to read your book when finished and I ope this pics makes it in there if poss?
All the best and looking forward to it.
Matt
This one was bought on its own (from new) and had the same spec as the other three but different body. Sorry for the poor quality pic but still worth a share I think and every little helps as they say.
Matt
Thanks Matt
Any chance you could send a better resolution shot of the broadside view Constructor 8 to the email addy in my initial post.
Dont forget to add your surname too… I’ll do what I can to add this in… Its a good shot.
Would you be happy to do a short driver anecdote story too? If you can, pop it on a doc file and email it over.
Thanks Matt
