I have a big picture somewhere (2ft x 3ft) that used to hang in the drivers mess room at Hay’s yard. When they folded my dad took it off the wall and gave it to me. It is of 7 of the Hays Volvos when they were brand new going along the motorway in convoy, taken from a foot bridge over the motorway. I’ll try and add it sometime if I can.

Those day cab 88’s are actually G88’s, they had a set foward front axle, rare over here apparently. Good pics lads  , regards, Chris

remember hays storage used to go there a lot in the late 80s picking up tea but i seem to remember hays transport around then unless they started up again, there were a lot of those old f88 shunters in the yard I knew a guy who did od days for an agency but he was not an hgv driver and he got a days work in hays and he had a lot of fun trying to reverse trailers onto banks no risk assesments or health and safety then , cheers good memories

Some amazing pictures Kevin. :stuck_out_tongue:

WAS SO SORRY TO HEAR OF THE PASSING OF BILLY WRIGHT. I STARTED AT HAYS AS AN APPRENTICE FITTER AT 15 AND MEET BILLY STRAIGHT AWAY AND WE BOTH BECAME GREAT FRIENDS.WHEN HAYS CLOSED I WAS THE WORK SHOP FORMAN. WE LEFT ON THE FRIDAY AND I STARTED MY OWN COMPANY ON THE SATURDAY.
I TOOK ON SIXWAY FRIEGHT AS A CUSTOMER AND WORKED FOR THEM TILL THE SAD DAY OF RECIEVERSHIP.IVE KEEPED ON TILL 31ST DEC WHEN I RETIRED. BUISNESS HAS BEEN GOOD TO ME.THINKING BACK TO BILLY IM SURE I WAS HIS BEST MAN WHEN HE MARRIED KIM, THEY LIVED IN BRENTWOOD.EVERY FITTER IN HAYS ALWAYS WANTED TO SERVICE OR MOT BILLS TRUCK BECAUSE HE LOOKED AFTER IT SO VERY WELL AND IT WAS ALWAYS KEEPED MINT.BILLY WAS A GENTLEMAN AND A SAD LOSE TO US ALL.

THOUGHT I WOULD ANSWER SOME OF THE QUESTIONS REGARDING HAYS TRANSPORT AND SIXWAY FRIEGHT.
IN 1971 HAYS STARTED BUYING VOLVOS FROM AILSA TRUCKS OF CHINGFORD.
THE FIRST HOME WAS A J PLATE G88 A VERY RARE TRUCK IN THIS COUNTRY.THE TRUCKS WERE COMING HOME SOME 5 OR 6 A WEEK.IN 1972 WE STARTED GETTING FACE LIFT F88s IN SLEEPER CAB DESIGN, WE EVEN HAD A 1972 F88 6X2 SLEEPER WITH LIFT BACK NON DRIVE AXLE FLEET NO 107.ALL HAD TD100A 9 LTR TURBO ENGINES WITH AN SR61 8 SPEED RANGE CHANGE BOX WITH SINGLE REDUCTION REAR AXLE.THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A G AND F MODEL WAS THAT THE G WAS FORWARD CONTROL IE THE FRONT AXLE WAS FORWARD OF THE DRIVER AND YOU HAD TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE CAB FROM STEPS BEHIND THE CAB AND THESE WERE ONLY DAY CABS.THE F 88 WAS BOTH DAY AND SLEEPER CAB AND THE FRONT AXLE WAS FURTHER BACK GIVING A SMALLER TURNING CIRCLE, ALL THE F s ON THIS FLEET WERE SLEEPERS.THE LAST VOLVOS WERE DELIVERED IN 1973 AND I THINK TOTAL VOLVO FLEET WAS 77 [I THINK].NOW UMC610M WAS A PROTOTYPE GIVEN TO US BY FMC TO TEST ON THE BODMIN TO GRAVESEND RUN. IT HAD THE MAKINGS OF A GREAT TRUCK, ■■■■■■■■ ENGINE FULLER BOX KIRKSTALL REAR AXLE , BUT THIS TRUCK WAS A DISASTER BRAKES WERE RUBBISH WIRING A NIGHTMARE CAB ROCKING ABOUT LIKE A BOAT GEAR LEVER LIKE A PADLE AND GAUGE READINGS GHANGING BY THE SECOND.THE ENGINE LASTED FOR YEARS. I PUT A NEW BLOCK IN IT WHEN SIXWAY OWNED IT AND WHEN THEY CLOSED I SOLD IT TO FAIRCLOUGH HAULAGE RAINHAM.
SOME YEARS LATER I SAW IT IN MANY BITS AT MCKELLERS BRAKERS IN TILBURY. BLOODY GOOD JOB !

hi,i remember those day cab f88s,they used to run down to cornwall with small tanks to load china clay.the first job i had after passing the hgv test was for a firm in liskeard called sunnybanks transport they had an ex hays f88 as well.
cheers steve.

I remember them too, I always wondered what they were carrying. It’s only taken me 30 odd years to find out…

Hi there,
It’s great to hear from people that remember Hays transport as it was such a massive part of my childhood, My dad would run down to St Austall 2 to 3 times a week on the china clay run and i would go with him during the school holidays i just loved being in the truck with him. I lived in South London with my mother and my dad would often phone to say he was going on a trip and to get my things together if i wanted to go with him which i always did. My sister and i had shares in Sixways and I’m sure if they were still about i’d be driving for them now. Many thanks for all your replies it means so much to me.
