Hauliers around the Ashton in Makerfield area

image.jpgHere’s another haulier from the A in M area. Wm Liptrot and son, based at ■■■■ Lane garage in Golborne. I’ve been holding this one in reserve. No one will remember them of course, as they won’t remember Pownall bros. another haulage company based 100 yards farther up ■■■■ lane, but it doesn’t really matter, at least it’s been set down here as an historical record. Liptrot’s was the place where I acquired my class one. Here’s the first wagon over 7.5 tons that I drove for them. The brake fade express. Photograph taken at the now non existent Whitebirk power station in Blackburn.

Hiya Eddie, were they anything to do with Liptrot from Chorley who I think ended up as Pickles of Chorley run by
two brothers.

No, not as far as I’m aware Jakdaw. Tom Liptrot threw in the towel and sold off all the wagons shortly after his father died. This would have been sometime in the mid 70’s at a guess. He only kept the yard and the workshop and rented them out. He went driving the low loader for an outfit in Athlone rd in Longford, Warrington. I forget their name.

Eddie.

I remember Pownall Bros. They did a bit of subbing off Fred Davies out of Runcorn docks, mid to late 60s.

Quite possibly Viking, I don’t know precisely what they carried, I only know it was all flat work, but then again , wasn’t everything back in the 60’s?

I don’t have any photos of Pownall’s wagons, and I very much doubt if anyone on here will have any ,with the possible exception being Mr. Pownall himself.

They didn’t run a large fleet, probably only 2 or 3 motors at the most. They were red in colour and I think they were S36 or S39 Fodens.

Young Mr. Pownall, I forget his first name, who must be retiring age by now I would have thought, had a 4 wheel Merc. curtainsider carrying pallets for Unit Pallet at Golborne the last time I was in there, about 4 years ago.

As a certain gentleman from Flintshire would say, ’ just a useless bit of info '.

Cheers. Eddie.

Here’s another one of Liptrot’s motors. FRE 322 B. a Stoke on Trent reg. the actual motor that I was driving during the qualifying period for the HGV licence in 1969 I think it was. Taken in a lay by on the Cat and Fiddle. That’s not me standing in front of it by the way, that’s Keith France.

Note the 4 in line tipping trailer fitted with greedyboards, a combination not to be recommended for anyone with a dysfunctional sphincter.

Going off thread a tad, does anyone know if a bottle of plonk from Aldi counts as one of my five a day ?
Answers on a postcard please.

Eddie.

I think so Eddie. My wife eats a lot of grapes and insists that they’re good for her. Like you, I think they’re better with a bit of yeast added, and that’s good for you too…

John.

Thanks for the reassurance John, I’ll be straight down to Aldi first thing in the morning to stock up on Chilean red. Just think how healthy I’ll be, not to mention the money I’ll save by not wasting it on all that boring fruit and veg stuff.

Raising a glass as I speak.

Cheers. Eddie.

image.jpgHere’s a photo taken outside ’ hut 59 ’ at Ravenhead brickworks. The machine driver is Tony Wilkinson, the other lad’s name was Ronnie I think.

The other photo was taken outside the specials shed. The machine driver’s name was Jeff and he came from Silverdale originally by all accounts.

Just another useless bit of info, as Mr Wadsworth would say.

Cheers. Eddie.

What engine would the Guy have had in it Eddie? nice shot! Cheers Dennis.

I remember w.liptrots eddie they used to go thro Urmston in the 60’s to Carrington power station

image.jpgHaving previously stated that I had no photographs of Pownall’s wagons, here’s one that I’ve just found among my late brother’s modest collection. Taken on April 28 th 1976 passing the now defunct L.U.T. bus garage at Howe Bridge heading into Leigh. Not possible to identify the driver but someone might know.

Apologies for the delay in my response Dennis, the Invincible was equipped with a Gardner 150. I think this particular vehicle had a ZF gearbox. Straight 6 obviously, no splitty ■■■■ back then. The 8 wheeled rigid had a David Brown box. Nothing between them in my opinion apart from the fact that the gear positions were in reverse. I’ve got another photo here of the same motor. This time the location is Brackley colliery. Just up the A6 from Little Hulton. This was taken when they were constructing the M61 motorway and Mc Alpine’s had their plant there. This would have been around about 1970. This was my motor, but the lad in the passenger seat was John Bennet and the other guy’s name was Derek Southworth. Isn’t it it strange that you can remember the the names of people that you barely knew almost 50 years ago and yet I couldn’t tell you what I did this morning. At the close of play, all I am is an ex wagon driver, and an inebriated one at that.

Cheers. Eddie.

Good looking motor Eddie. Glad to hear you’re getting at least one of your five a day from the red grapes. Personally I prefer the White, but I guess the end result is the same!

John

It’s always nice to see your name come up on the forum John. I’ve got several photos of Pritchett’s warehouse that I’m waiting to post. Don’t get too excited though as they may have been taken before your time, and if I’m being honest, they’re a bit boring, to say the least.

Speaking of 5 a day, Tesco were doing a deal on Southern Comfort last week. So according to my reckoning, if I have a yoghurt now, that’ll be my limit for today.

I was in Fleetwood yesterday and had a clear view of the Barrow shipyards. I now have a yearning to revisit historical locations. John, this may be a good time to consider a trip to Benidorm or suffer the consequences.

Eddie.

I just can’t seem to get the hang of this 5 a day nonsense. I assumed the more you had, the better you would feel. Well it seemed to be working for a while, but just for the record I feel crap this morning, so I think I’ll go back to my one a day in future.

Moving on apace, does anyone remember that thing they had in the old Headlight magazine ? It was called the Atkinson drivers view from the cab competition, or something like that.

Basically they would give you a photo of, Blackpool tower let’s say. They would then superimpose the interior of an Atki cab, steering wheel and all onto the aforesaid photo and you had to guess where on earth you were.

Well this is my version. I call it the Guy Invincible drivers view from the cab competition. It’s free to enter and there may be a prize for the lucky winner. Possibly.

Why not give it a go ? What’s the worst that could happen ? You could get it wrong and look a right ■■■■ in front of your mates but that’s about all. I’ll give you a clue. It isn’t Blackpool.
