A couple of one of the training units they use at Gateway. 98 Volvo with 4 over 4 crash box

newmercman:
You found Canadian Tire then, the second best toy shop in the world, wait until you get to a Home Depot then…OMG

Then there’s Cabelas and Wholesale Sports. I went into te Owattona Cabelas last week. Out of this world.

You sure that’s a 98 Volvo taffy

Looks like an 02 or newer to me, the older ones had a chrome grille and series one FH interior, the 02 onwards have that grille in the pics & the dash out of the series two FHs

As BTD says, Cabelas, should come with a health warning, well a wealth warning anyway, could get a big overdraft if I was let loose in the there with my debit card

Interesting thread. I’m thinking of moving to Canada for a while. I’m waiting, very patiently, (8-9 years patiently), for my family based green card for the U.S. ( My father is a U.S. Citizen), so I started to look into Canada. One of the reasons being that I’d be nearer to both my parents while I was waiting, as my mother lives in Nassau, Bahamas.
Do they still recruit from the U.K ? Can I still get a visa/ work permit if I get a job offer, or has the situation changed at all?

98 is what the folder containing the paperwork said so I’m not to sure. They use 2 of the Volvos and o1 cascadia all 3 been round the block a few times but they server the purpose. Rumour had it when they replace them they are looking at automatic units as thats the way things are heading

Yea they still recruit from the UK. At the moment there is about a 10 - 15% shotage of drivers in Canada it just depends what sort of frieght you wanna haul and where you wanna live. Think I mentioned it before not to sure now but each Province sets its own taxes etc so a bit of homework is required there. When you arrive to start workk you will get issued with a 2 year temp work permit, with the comapany I’m going with after 6 months you can sit down take a look at each other and decide if you wanna stay there and if they like you, if so then they will start the ball rolling on your PR. If it dont come through in the next 18 months then you can extend your TWP for another 2 yrs while you wait for it all to be sorted. My place use a different company to do all visa applications etc for them and the specialise in this field so its all left to them.

One thing I will say to anyone ‘thinking’ about the move is that once there are enough drivers in country then chances are the numbers they let in will drop big time so dont think to hard lol I have only been here for 2 weeks now but from what I have seen so far I really dont wanna catch that plane eastbound home.

Thanks for the info mate. I have been wondering when it would start to tail off…That’s the one thing I want to avoid, Missing the boat so to speak.

Just found out 1st mentor run is off down stateside to Salt Lake City in the morning will fill in on the trip when I get wifi access. After that may have my 3 days in the classroom or over to Vancouver yet have to see how it pans out

Have a safe trip Driver, you got some stunning scenery in front of you :sunglasses:

Enjoy your trip, theres some nice scenery going down there. I was weekended in Salt Lake City a few weeks ago and took a tour of the largest copper mine in the world. It was one hell of a hole, quite litterally!

Enjoy
The drop down into Salt Lake City can be hard on the brakes and the nerves but it’s an experience everyone should have seeing that city.

That Volvo in your pics is deffo newer than 98 Taff, they changed the grill and lights to that style in late 2001.

Keep up Pat, I said that days ago

Got to jump in here to stop you guys fighting, that Volvo is a 2003. Taffytrucker was out in a '98 Volvo, but he has got the wrong photo up. I know, cos that 2003 pile of ■■■■■ was the truck I took my test in. It has spent it’s life hauling milk tankers on the gravel roads, if any of you guys know what the gravel roads are like, you’ll know why its a pile of crap now.

Ok … keep yer knickers on, I was just confirming you very words

You said earlier in this thread that the Volvo you took your test in was being changed for a newer model but more importantly it was going to be an automatic gearbox, if you take the test in this do you still get the manual aspect to your licence granted or not.
