At least some of W Keith’s motors had Gardner 150s in. The ministry took pity on them when the Millom ironworks closed and converted their contract a licences to a licences.Bill Keith converted the Chinese 6s to units. I thought he’d done the work himself, but may be wrong. I seem to remember he did quite a lot of timber from the Penrith area. He also did a fair bit out of Bowaters in Barrow.
Remember one of the drivers - a Millomite, told me he’d had his Guy from new. I think he said it did 42 flat out and he had once had 24 ton 14 on it, which says something for the Gardner. It had never broken down.
If I’m wrong on any of that I’m sure you’ll put me right Dennis
Aye John,Kruger sure was a character or as Jack Brady used to tell me “Billy would make a fine fleet engineer as long as you kept him away from the traffic office and the rates schedules” !!! Your right he did run some 8 wheeler Invincibles that had the 150 LX engines and when Millom finished he cut the 8wheelers down to steer units only problem was when they were tested for the first time they got knocked back to circa 24 ton gvw down from 32 ton which basically was their death warrant as they only had air over hydraulic braking. The ones I was on about were the steer Warriors that had the Leyland 375 engines.Kruger was also geared up at Flookburgh for transhipping pig iron,I believe that as well as a ramp to tip from he also had a magnet on a jib on the front of a Fordson major tractor,he wasn’t averse to tipping two Steers onto one 8 wheeler !!! Well for the rates they run for out of Millom he would need all the advantages he could use! Cheers Dennis.
Thanks for that Dennis, I’d got it half right!
I always got on well with Bill - that wasn’t his real first name IIRC, it was actually something posh, but he was known as Bill, among other things!
The only run in I had with him was as said previously. I’d negotiated £90.00 (I think) for Northfleet to Barrow, which was a cracking rate at the time. Bill undercut it by £30. When I challenged him about it he just said that rates should be between the haulier and customer and private.
The 2 speed axle packed up on one of the Mastiffs when I was unit only at the top of Lindale. I gave Bill a ring and he came out with his wrecker. Bill lifted the back end. I was getting a rope out to lash the steering wheel, but he just said ‘No, jump in and hold it straight.’
We then flew back to Flookburgh at full speed - including diving down the short cut at Jack Hill - with me getting cramp from holding the wheel still - the castoring kept trying to pull it to one side or the other.
Harry Barker sold me a complete 2nd hand diff unit for £10.00. Think I was only off the road for a day.

Bill Keiths proper name was Errington, but apparently he did not like been called by it,so would “Bill” have been his dads name possibly as in W.Keith & Son Ltd. ? We used to sub him the odd load of pulp back to Beetham in the early/mid 70’s and I re-call one day that Bill was at the mill himself with one of the Ford D1000’s he ran which had a Leyland 600 engine “shoehorned” into it,looked a bit like a Gardner 8 cylinder with a bit stuck out of the back.IIRC Bill had a Polish fitter who was an “Ace” bloke at his job,I was in Keiths workshop one day and they had a 40ft trailer tipped upside down which they were welding !!! Another thing I re-call was Bill had a Ford Granada which he more-or-less wrote off but rebuilt THREE times,I kid you not,he was also a big Free Mason which probably accounts for never getting stopped for DD !! He always had a “■■■” stuck in his mouth usually down to the tip but he could still carry on a conversation !!! One of the industries characters if ever there was one ! Cheers Dennis.

Evening all, now though of you who know Mdme Stouffs, will realise that the Guy was far too slow up the grade, so simply had to be “bulldozed” out of the way…extra money if you could do three trips in the time for two!!!..and some of them could…
Many happy, (confused, or confusing), hours in Stouffs…then I took some part exchanges…OH Dear!!!
That Big J does have a rather large silencer■■?
Cheerio for now.

A smart looking Smith of Maddiston Big J 6x4, would she have been a double drive? If so what size engine did they put in them?
This looks like it could have been the one from the Earls Court Guy Motors stand ! ■■■■■■■ powered,of course ! Cheers Bewick.

The 240 Percy powered Big J’s were all painted in the series 3 paint job, including the one I collected from Newton le Willows, the 6 x 4 is painted in the series 2.

Baffling me with BS,series 1,2 & 3 Uh! but I can recall seeing some of their last motors with a big “S” on the door, they were “B” Series ERF’s with 8LXB engines but I never saw a Big J with the LXB engine so they must have been in the “ghost series” I guess !! Cheers Dennis.
Does anybody else remember Charnley’s of Longtown. They had Guy Big J’s in’69/'70. Double drive six wheelers with pole trailers and flats. Red cabs. I always thought they looked the dog’s b******s carrying 20 tons plus round timber.

Stranger than known…
I’m saying nothing.
Not your style to say nothing R O F
Cheers Dave,
All we need is a Guy specialist to certify the chassis is/was put together in Wolverhamton.
I still think the best Guy,s had the V10 ■■■■■■■ in.

I thought RK Crisp’s Guys with the tropical roofs had ■■■■■■■ NTC 335s in (just as Pickford’s did). Somewhere on the TNUK forum this claim is made. Can anyone confirm or deny? Robert
