If he made his money when the going was good all he’s doing is maintaining his level of vehicle and that’s easy enough.
I know people who’ve been in the job for 30 years and have never run anything newer than 7 or 8 year old trucks & some of them can’t afford to tax their cars, let alone replace their (now) 14 year old 124 Scania with a 2005 R420!!!
