Good tracks rarely heard on radio

youtu.be/ZOgTVJOdFVU

Four tracks which I haven’t heard on the wireless for donkeys years, maybe even going back to when they were current. All evoke a time in my life when big new things were happening, first full time job, steady girlfriend, motorbike, pubbing with my mates, holidays without parents and so on. Maybe not the best songs ever written, but special to me in their own way:-
Arrival - Friends
Arrival - I will survive
The Band - The weight
Canned Heat - Lets work together

Try PJ Proby singing ‘Somewhere’, what a voice.

‘There must be an angel’ by The Eurythmics.
Love that vocal introduction by Annie Lennox…the VOICE of an angel.
Sampled on a Utah Saints track btw…name escapes me.

Heard this for first in ages on Boom Radio which is becoming my default choice better than Heart and Absolute 60’s/70’s.

McGuinness Flint - When I’m Dead and Gone. Blasting up the A1 last night and came on Gold UK. Cracking record.

White Plains: ‘When you are a King’. Can’t remeber the last time I heard it on the radio.

Maybe I’m listening to the wrong radio channel, but what happened to the radio presence of all the premature-death artistes we grew up with?

I think this one might have been on an epside of the “Banana Splits” in between “Arabian Knights” and “Three Muskeeteers”
Been unable to find re-runs of all the episodes though.
1973- ish…

I think this was on right after, on saturday mornings TV…

Just imagine the conversation:

Peter Firth -
Q - Whatdoya wanna be acting when you grow up?
A - Secret Agent Spymaster.

One of my favourite Four Seasons records.

The original recording, by the writers of the song.

I heard Sultans of Swing on the radio today and it reminded me that when I do hear it in the last couple of years I am convinced that the guitar solos are played differently.

A bit like when you see a band live and they make some subtle changes but in this instance nothing other than the solos come over as being different.

I know that the simple answer to this is that 4 decades of time passed has affected my recollection, but I don’t want to jump to that simple answer…

It’s that or the Mandela effect take your pick.
I’m certain that the Queen record We are The Champions really did end with the lyrics Of The World at the end of it for example.

Nah, it has always ended with ‘‘We are the champions’’.

Speaking of Queen, you would think they only ever made 2 singles when you listen to the radio :unamused: …‘I want to break free’ and ‘Bohemian ■■■■ rhapsody’…(Not just me who refers to it that way btw…so has Roger Taylor. )
Best Queen track imo rarely played on radio is this.

and then this.

How could I forget this…better than the T.Rex original I reckon.
Only heard it once on radio in last 5 years or so…great track imo.

Love the vid, The opening sequence, the mega fit blonde on there always reminds me of my Mrs when I first seen her dancing when she was modelling clothes (not many  ) on the stage. :sunglasses:
Great vocals by late Robert Palmer, and guitar courtesy of half of Duran Duran.

Rumour (or urban myth ) says is it was Glynis Barber off ‘Dempsey and Makepeace’ cop show from the 80s.

I don’t know, stilI think the version they have played on radio 2 has some significant differences on lead guitar. Has there been a “2 Mark Knophlers” theory along the same lines of “Paul is Dead”?

It’s maybe an abbreviated version for radio.
I love that guitar solo on Sultans of Swing, but 9 times out of 10 they cut it short on the radio.
Same with the guitar bit on Hotel California, they cut that short too,.which annoys the hell out of me.

So yesterday I donned the headphones at sat at the PC to listen to it from a few different places, including BBC Sounds.

Started with this, which is true to what I remember, and the copy I have on CD

But there are 1 or 2 other studio versions it transpires :

These clips are more in line with what I heard recently, not sure if they are both one and the same recording :

I’ll have a listen later on mate and give you the benefit of my knowledgable expert opinion as an ex ‘Superstar DJ’. :unamused:

I keep telling the kids to their eternal embarrasment…If I’d stuck at it I could have been the next Jimmy Saville. :open_mouth:
