MIKE P:
great pics tom, what loads were these ? nice and square i rekon he makes the grade dennis dont you ■■
milkmantom:
aye he did photo,s are a bit scarce i,l put another marchon load on for you
Tom hasn’t sheeted these loads Mike, well the MMB one maybe ! but he sure can dig out the photos though. A Marra of mine from Aspatria reckons he couldn’t sheet a single bed !!! Only joking As Tom says the Johnson Bros Scania would have been loaded with Soap powder from Albright & Wilson ,Whitehaven (formerly Marchon Products) The Sidac 4 wheeler belongs to the firm of that name (formerly British Ray-O-Phane) and they have been the principal employer in Wigton for probably over 60 years, they also had a plant in St.Helens IIRC.They manufacture cellophane paper and their main competitor used to be the Courtaulds owned British Cellophane who had factories at Bridgewater and Barrow,Brady’s were their exclusive hauliers from the time they opened in Barrow in the late 50’s until they closed down.During the later 80’s and early 90’s Bewick Transport,in conjunction with Western Transport hauled the Cellulose pulp from Portbury to BCL Barrow,it never went down well with Bradys but I believe they didn’t get on with Westerns, anyway it was a decent regular job for us for a number of years.Cheers Dennis.
Hi ,Milkmantom, have you or do you know iff Johnston bros had a Layland egro cabed beaver unit 600 engine ,6 speed splitter box ,think the reg no ,was orm /// F any pics, or info please ,Cheers Barry
I can remember them loading Carnation Milk at Dumfries in the 50/60s Era, General Milk Products Ltd was the correct name, I loaded ther e when I worked for Baxters Road Services on the Quayside Newcastle upon Tyne, They hauled & stored & re-deliverd all over the place as far as Hinderwell in East Yorks & Falstone Near Keilder & Whitfield on the wat to Alston, Plus all the local drops around the Toon, Regards Larry.

Dennis,
Not a problem,if I had taken pics of any of my previous transport employers trailers etc,I would be only too pleased to post them on here, but I didnt take a camera about with me,mores the pity, the only photo that I have of anything related to road transport was when I was on heavy plant haulage for John Jones,ERF A series, with King Semi low loader, with a CAT D9 dozer, with full blade and Kelly ripper, although our dog has left puncture marks in it,will have to dig it out!!

Hi Larry when did carnation start to use the fork trucks that turned the pallets onto your own ? this was the
first place i remember seeing it done in the early 70`s
Tommy Hardy W/house-fork truck driver used to do all the loads in the top yard for carnation at Benton square the local deliveries where done by an old driver called Ray just lived
over the road in Holystone the Bedford was the last motor to have Baxter’s on the side.
The late 60s I would say, The Bedford you refer to would have been a TK Van if my mems correct it was originally driven by the Late Tim Nichol whom like myself worked for Baxters in the 50s, I think the reg was LVK …D, I left the job in 1968, The merger with Tony Waugh was staring & I didn’t get along with Boula Bill, Mind you not many of Baxters drivers did, But they were happy days , Regards Larry.
We used to have some right tossers of agency drivers when I worked for Swifts.
I remember one old git in particular who was a filthy, dirty unwashed git who would say he didn’t know how to rope and sheet and expect us to do it for him Hard luck mate, do it or stay where you are. I would sometimes come up behind him with what looked like an air balloon blowing up where he had deliberately put the front sheet on first to make it look bad, it never worked and he was told to find work elsewhere
When they arrived and said “I can’t sheet and rope” they were told “Then go away untill you can”
Best load I ever hauled with sheets was one I hooked up to in Stroud to bring back to Northampton for a Boston driver to take on, it was as tight as a drum, the guy at Stroud who was a good mate had got it ready for me, it was reels of paper, there was not a ripple or flap on the entire drive back. Next day I was called into the office and congratulated for the best bit of sheeting ever seen on the company
Thank you Stroud yard man … I never told them it was you
milkmantom:
i think they should bring roping @sheeting back it kept you fit
theres still a few of us at it pal
And I’ll be one of 'em starting next week. Going back on the wagon after a break of 15 years (gulp ), need to pay the rent and the business I’ve been running is deader than a dead thing. Carting finished fancy-schmancy board around town so the slightest hint of rain and it’ll be out with the sheet (tarp, as they call them here). I’ve nt sheeted a load in 15 years so I’ll post a couple of pics if it looks like jokes on here are in short supply
