Good Roping & Sheeting, Errrr NOT

Luke222:
I hope nobody takes pics of my loads! I only passed my test in October and was thrown in at the deep end and have had to sheet up on a few of the jobs I’ve done! Tried my best but they are far from pretty and I’m happy as long as the sheets not flapping in the wind!!

not so far pal but I will as soon as I get the chance  :sunglasses:

Ste Burrow:
Not only did Bewicks have lads who could sheet and rope they also had decent sheets that could cover full loads of pulp and reels. I remember seeing loads of reels covered with four or five sheets. Bewicks only need one which made it a much tidier job.

Always Two main sheets and a Fly if required Steve !!!You’d pull a bollock trying to lift one massive main sheet !!Cheers Dennis.

Aye too true Dennis. A bit more manageable with two mainsheets. Especially on top of a load of Andrex to Thurrock.

An early '76 shot of one of the F88’s we had just got, seen here about to leave Bowater Scotts Barrow mill with a trailer loaded for our regular destination,West Thurrock RDC.The trailer would be returned to Milnthorpe and then trunked overnight to Daventry and would be on the doorstep in West Thurrock for 7 am next morning.

Ste Burrow:
Very tidy sheeting on these Volvos. Nice square loads are the best to do. This is my attempt this week with 28 ton of sand in one ton bags. Not my tidiest sheeting but as the fly sheet was bigger than the sand (it was made for fertiliser) I had to tuck the sheet under itself at the chock rail. Please be nice with the constructive critisim

Looks better than some who just put one strap over the back 2 bags ey.

Anyone got any pics of wool loads ,never the easiest things to load let alone sheet and they didnt always look neat at times but if it wasnt done right you`d know about it

One of ebay,it is wool,i worked for them

Nice 1 cheers

Nice mid '70’s shot here of three of our trailers parked at the side of the A6 in Milnthorpe, the nearest one is loaded with Sheerness Steel re-bar,the middle one is a Bewick trailer loaded with Libbys for the S.East and the Black fly sheeted one is a McGuffie trailer probably loaded for either Tescos at Winsford or maybe Quicksave at Prestatyn.

Great photos Dennis, Keep them rolling, Regards Larry.

Same place, similar date late afternoon, but this time 3 loads of Bowaters Scott tissue from Barrow mill, the 2 Atkis will be trunked to Daventry and return with woodpulp or possibly core board reels for Bowaters from Reeds Tovil mill. The ERF was based at Dudley where it was double shifted between Milnthorpe and West Thurrock,it would have been in Milnthorpe for service and the Dudley night man would collect it at around mid-night and it would be in West Thurrock with the other two loads next morning ! Cheers Dennis.

hi dennis hope your well sheets and ropes are still a regular sight in our yard,
most weekends will see unusual loads tractor up the headboard a few pallets of cement behind stacked on top of some steel plate,
Theres still a few proper hauliers about but not many
all the best

Did you use the slip sheets on the loads you carried for the clamp trucks ?

I think Dennis and I are from the same school,I was taught never to use a rope over a flysheet, easily holed, might be same school, but definitely different years!!!

I recall that we did try a set of slip sheets once (Reed Tpt.)on a Bowater load but they were more of a hinderence than a help Bri ! Cheers Dennis.

All 24/26 lifts were shrunk wrapped so provided you did nothing silly and tread carefully it was OK,we never had anyone fall off and we hauled '000’s of these loads, and we only ever had ONE load slip which we transhiped without losing a single case !! Phew ! Cheers Dennis.
