NVD are a car transporter firm from Ireland taking home roughly a 1000 euros a week and fairly straight forward work
Fairly straight forward work !!!
you’ve obviously never driven or operated a proper car transporter
Hah, i well remember a new big cheese finance type guru being taken on when i worked for a rapidly expanding car transportation operation.
At the meeting when he was introduced, in his inaugural speech he dispelled the myth that car transporter operating was anything special and informed us that there was no difference between a car and a tin of beans as regards transporting.
It might have been the same meeting when the gaffer (still in the game) also informed us that he could get drivers ten a penny.
Both have come to rue those words over the years.
NVD, yep those lads life the life of Reilly, 35 hour week , never have to rush , simple job anyone can do it
So do you want to say car transporter work is super difficult and not all drivers can do it?
Riho:

No, i am saying that it’s an unusual job that takes a lot of learning (years) to perfect, and despite trying their best is not for everyone, hence why the pay is relatively higher though the pay differentials go through peaks and troughs just like any speciality, i left transporters when i could earn more on direct delivery small supermarket work and returned to it when the supermarket concerned closed and the cars were paying better again, you didn’t get on the big companies paying top dollar then unless you were referred in those days, i did get there eventually but had to go through years of slumming it first.
The job is not for everyone and this is no reflection on those it doesn’t work out for, just as some drivers don’t want or like the realities of other parts of the industry, some can’t get their head round the loading aspect, some find the constant concentration too much, some really don’t like the size height and unstable nature of the vehicles now normally used in the industry (this may not apply to NVD who last time i saw one still use full length prime mover two deck outfits? which are far more stable though they carry fewer cars obviously and run lower overall) if you’ve done it yourself then you know if you take your mind off it for even a second then an expensive ■■■■ up is on the cards.
I’ve known long term general haulage drivers try their hand, chaps that have done low loaders roping and sheeting double stacked pallets all the range of jobs but just couldn’t get their heads around it and leave, and yes i’ve known of regular continental drivers go to NVD and end up returning so they’re no different, similarly i’ve known other drivers who’ve taken to it like ducks to water and within weeks are throwing cars on like they’ve been doing it 20 years, but you won’t know if its for you till you do the job yourself.
Car transporter operators have got used to the high fall out rate (anything up to a year after starting, most who make it past the year continue long term), hence why the highest payers (and/or those who use new top line kit), except for Ford, almost exclusively poach already skilled time served drivers.

No I have never driven a ‘proper’ car transporter (perhaps NVD’s are made of plastic I don’t know) and nor do I want to, however we obviously have a different meaning of straight forward work. NVD are not pushed so can take their time loading and unloading. I find 12 drops of meat around London staight forward, doesn’t mean it is for everyone, there is a reason car transporter drivers are paid the wage they get, so if they can’t hack it then they can always leave
For comparison purposes, assume all jobs are equally crap, and only the money or lack thereof separates the good jobs from the bad.
Why can’t it always be “all about the money”?
I’d drive a dustcart for £20ph.
I’d transport dead animals for £25ph
I’d even double man with trolls for £30ph.

It’s The £80 per hour the troll would want to double man with you that is the sticking point…

Big Truck:
I asked before on a car transporter thread why NVD run so often on boats from NI to Sunderland empty.
Maybe not a bad job for €800/1000 home when right bitta loading one way!!![emoji41] [emoji108]

I suspect the answer is quite simple nothing coming out of Ireland, send them out empty keep em working away from base all week bring em back loaded at the end of the week/ fortnight, when our home port was quiet we would load out of a different port and do just that. So your first journey is empty the rest of the time your loaded not that easy after all.

No,
I see them regularly on the boats empty during the week (Tue/Wed 2400/0400 boats) as well.[emoji52]
Did you get trunks there? I got offered an assessment for nights or days the other week, but was told store deliveries no matter what never trunks. How do you find it?
I am similar to you, passed in May, from Wigan, think I commented on your post in the Newbie forum.
I don’t find any shortage of jobs available round here, some are a bit ■■■■■■ money though, some are good.
Big Truck:
Tesco are in the middle of a recruitment drive for full time drivers here in NI.
16 vacancies approx 12 on nights 4 on days.
5on 2off and rotating over the weekends for approx £430/450home and they wonder why diddly squat DECENT drivers applied!!![emoji52] [emoji12]

is that in direct or through the agency ?
Was direct Tesco FT on their on website and Indeed.co uk last month.
Would you work over the weekends for £450home 5shifts!!!
The drivers on the “old contracts” are on £14hr+ nightshifts and the new starts are on PISH £9.80hr plus £10shift “productivity bonus”!!![emoji52]

You’ll only get the basic hours / crap shifts and no overtime as that will be given to the agencies to cover as cheap as possible . Was there a few years ago through Grafton and No I wouldn’t go back for that .

When I started there in July, I was told that there were only vacancies on nights…we are certainly very short of night drivers!
The night work is nearly all trunking, although I usually get one store delivery per week…somewhere 3-4 hours drive away.
It’s ok for a first Class 1 permanent job…to get that vital 2 years experience under your belt. The other drivers are a good bunch,
and the trunking is pretty easy work.
Certainly a better place for a newly-passed Class 1 to start, than some other places I could mention. I’ll pm you more details if you’re interested?
Agree with you…there is no shortage of driving jobs in the Wigan area. In fact there are more jobs than drivers, but as you say many of
them are for terrible money! I’ve seen Class 1 nights jobs advertising at £24k pa and Class 1 nights at £10 per hour! The job I currently have,
pays more than the others that I was offered.

Think mate will be offered a start soon,
He’s not too sure as taking a bit of a pay cut plus working those weekends but he’s gonna give it a 3month trial !!![emoji6]
