Hi Happy. That pic was taken outside my house up here. Were you wanting specifically pics of Pilkington,or general pics,or pics of Lappland.Let me know,i don’t have a printer\scanner but can fix something for you on a personal basis.Mike.

I saw a glass trailer on the ferry recently and it was plugged un like the fridges. Anyone know why this is?At a guess glass will shatter when cold when not in a frame so by keeping at a cert temp it wont be as fragile
Load off ■■■■■■■■.
Its to keep the rams on tight holding the glass inside the trailer.
Was there any need to be so rude? You really do come across as a most obnoxious person.
And yes some of the units are indeed heated, condensation is the enemy for float glass transportation.
No you are right that was obnoxious and rude and I apologise to nick 2008.
But you were correct. Adam told me today that they plug unaccompanied trailers in to drive a small compressor, it keeps the air bags full and stops it dropping the stillage on the floor. The auxiliary heating is run from Eberspachers but it takes its power from the lorry
I dont know what sort of trailer your mate has but its impossible for the ‘‘glass trailers’’ to sink to the ground as they are fitted with safety arms which lock onto the axles when it sinks more than about 6 inches, so as the air bags empty the locks engage and stop the trailer about 6-8 inches off the ground.

I don’t know the make, yet. But this is his motor, he will hate me for this as it isn’t clean.

not a problem JD as I said it was a guess. I was just thinking that glass will shatter when it gets too cold. much like metal will just snap as it becomes brittle
The trailer is,if my memory is correct,a Faymonville. They are the same design as we had on Nijman Zeetank only we had the German Orthaus trailers. They are almost identical in design. As i said when you are loaded,or indeed enpty and you raise the trailer up to the running postion you pull an air valve[like the ones to knock off the brakes].this make security arms swing over the axles and lock to stop the trailer descending to the ground if you have an air leak or one of the air bags bursts which is a weakness due to the nature of the trailer having no solid axles. They are all independent axles which is why they roll alot.
If it drops on to the security arms it
Probly makes for a bumpier ride on the ferry hence the plug in to keep them fat.

Hydraulic rams don’t normally need a permanently operating pump to keep them pressurised, unless there is a leak somewhere.
^^^^^^ fact!!

The first thing all drivers do on the overnight ferry crossings is start I the engines open the back door and retighten the rams as the become slack if left for any period off time… leaks or no
Leaks.
Hi all.Sometimes on ferries when there was very bad weather we were asked to lower the suspension on the trailer down to the safety stops so they could chain them more tightly as they tend to roll a lot.
We were always told NOT to open the back doors when the trailer is loaded as the door itself forms an integral part of the chassis. In the door are electronic sensors so when the door is closed these feel any flexing of the trailer during transport and adjust the pads to retain constant pressure on the stillage. When you open the doors with the pads pushing against the glass the trailer can stretch at the back by as much as 6inches,then you can’t close the door again. As the system is electronic\hydraulic there is never any reduction in pressure once the pads are applied as the system automatically compensates for any variation in pressure. The only time the pads can come loose is if you have a hydraulic oil leak from the system.

I’ll take your word for that.
My mate Steve who works for luxgaurd out of hull told me that the unaccompanied trailers do get plugged in to power the generator which keeps air in the system. Their are no heating systems on their trailers.
I suspect their are different variations of glass carriers and thus the different opinions here.

Hydraulic rams don’t normally need a permanently operating pump to keep them pressurised, unless there is a leak somewhere.
Orthaus floatliners have 8 hydraulic rams to hold the glass in place. To accomodate slight movement of the glass the pump cuts in occasionally. They are double acting cylinders so the pump spins to increase and decrease the pressure on the glass. There is a buzzer and a warning light in the cab to warn that the pump is running. A quick flash and a buzz now and then is normal, but if it stays on it’s probably better to stop and have a look.
You can just see one of the safety pawls Hutpik mentioned. (Behind the back wheel).

How would Pilkingtons get on without some of the advice on here?
Hi Geoff.I just saw the pics.Nice.I have the same sort of pics but have no printer or scanner living the ‘‘simple life’’.That is perfect to show how everything works.Where, and how did you get the pic of Nijman Zeetanks trailer.Do you work for them[i left in 2008 to move up here] Just curious.Mike

Haha Mike I think your memory is playing tricks on you, must be all that snow . I 've worked at NZ on and off for about 15yrs. I met you there in the period from about 2002-2005. I ve been back there for about 18mths now.

Hi Geoff. As i said in PM sorry,it’s an age thing.AS i said i now work part time driving a 60t tipper in the mines[and have about 50 reindeer]
Take care.Mike
The reindeer for extra traction Mike?
Hi Bri.If i load app 45t and have double drive then if i can’t get traction with 660hp then i give up.No the reindder are for my extra job which i do up here in December[hohoho humbug].
I bought the reindeer from a guy who was retiring.they are looked after by Sami people who take a percentage from us but do all the work so we just get the meat price less their cut.

They have air rams, that’s why there’s electric compressor. Crappy design.
