Getting a CDL in the states

To PilotWolf…If you have been married to your American wife for 3 yrs you can then file for citizenship, as you have been married for 3yrs it is then fast tracked to citizenship by virtue of having an American wife. Hope this helps.

Ray, thanks - no we’ve only been married just over a year.

So I can apply 3 years from the wedding date? I thought it was 3 years after the green card issue?

W.

Getting a CDL in the States is not a problem, it’s really easy if you know the rules.
Finding a good job is the other thing, as an unexperienced driver (European experience doesn’t count) you will have problems to find a good paid job.
There are lots of companies (long haul) who would accept you like Schneider, Werner, SWIFT and so on, but you won’t be happy.
As robinhood quoted, check

it seems to be a really good forum to sort it out.

To PilotWolf…no its 3yrs from date of marriage, same sort of regs apply ( I think ) if I remember right. Proof of finances in joint names, bills in joint names, still in marriage but the biggest hurdle is the test questions there are 100 of them but they pick any 10 from the 100 , once you get 6 right that’s a pass. This is all done at the interview, I had to go to downtown Cleveland 3 times during the process, the last visit was the final one for the interview, once that is completed then its waiting to be scheduled for the ceremony.

ray

OK thanks for that means about 6 months less wait then!

Pat Hasler:
It was 2001 and just like Flyer, I got a work permit before the green card. My green card expires next year and I will have to renew it, I am told it will cost about $400 for everything.

Pat, why don’t you take up U.S. citizenship. We get to keep our British citizenship and passports.

Regards Paul.

Exactly right Paul John…I got both,

Hi Ray, yes took my citizenship back in 1999. Back a little before that I lived not to far from you in Mayfield Heights on the North West side of Cleveland. It was a great place to live with lots going on back in 1986/87.
Mark commented a while back about the Armish etc, beautiful countryside especially in the fall. Great people too.
Chagrin Falls was a favorite for me and my girlfriend. Not forgetting local girl Chrissy Hind of the Pretenders, saw her at the Richfield coliseum. What about Orange Blossom outdoor music park.
The winters can be harsh, but as you know life and work goes on. Been living in Florida for the past 22 years, don’t think I could handle the cold nowadays.

Regards Paul.

Hi PilotWolf…have you given it any thought being a chopper pilot in the hospitals lifeflights

Being a US citizen has it’s downfalls, jury duty is the main one for me. I do not wish to get embroiled in some long court case getting paid a pittance for weeks on end and loosing my home. US citizens are treated very unfairly in a lot of ways, health care in particular.

To Paul John, agree with you there Chagrin Falls is really nice and been to the Blossom many times.

To Pat…you,re dead right about jury duty, not like in UK the longer the case the better off you were, 100% with you on health care as without it one is screwed, like if we never had it my wife,s chemo would have been $42,000+ for each treatment but she has completed the 6 scheduled t/ments should get results this Mon morning .So glad I,m semi retired , gave up truck driving back in 92.

Hi Pat, and Ray.
Ray funny you brought up Chargrin Falls, as it happened I spoke to my girlfriend at that time earlier today. She has been back in the U.K. for 6 years. She is having an operation herself first week of January, quite a big one with no cost to herself and twelve weeks paid recovery. Beats the crap out of what we have here in the States.

I have always had health insurance here mostly through big corporate company’s or my ex wife’s employer. The group insurance was cheaper than the individual rate I now pay.
For just my daughter and myself it costs $460.00/month that’s after tax money. My employer at that time mandated I have insurance, if I didn’t find coverage they would add me to theirs which was more expensive with higher co-pays.

However, I was glad I had insurance as one year last August I ended up in hospital and had a triple by pass. With out insurance I wouldn’t of gone to my doctor and would not be writing this tonight.
One year ago my 13 year old daughter complained of head aches. She had a growth in her cranium which had to be cut out and a 24mm x 24mm plate fitted. My insurance company allowed me to have her treated at Nemours children’s hospital, where she undergoes chemo every three weeks and is half way through her treatment. She has LCH a bone disease in which ulsers attack the bone structure. She has been through a lot but with out that insurance I would be facing financial ruin. Obviously, its not about the money but like most insurance you cant afford to have it, but cant afford not to either.
My insurance is allowing me to get the best treatment I can for her.

This Obama care is going to hurt a lot of people financially, as a lot of company’s will drop the group plans or increase the percentage paid by the employee.
My girlfriend came home ■■■■■■■■ Friday as her insurance premium is rising along with co-pays, deductible’s and visits to specialists.
I am probably going to be priced out of the market next year, and end up paying a fine( tax garnish) due to this dummy running the country and end up with no coverage.
Obama care will trigger another recession, and peoples health will suffer because they cant afford to visit the doctor.

The boys in Canada are better off for sure.

Pat, I agree with your statement about the U.S. citizens (naturalized) being treated unfairly.

Regards Paul.

To Paul John, prayers and best wishes to you and your daughter and may the outcome be good.

Pilot Wolf… URGENT…check out the USCIS website as you can now file for US citizenship after 2yrs and your " PROBATIONARY" green card might turn out to be a “Conditional” green card and the conditions have to be removed in the 90 days before card expires.

Do you have a link for that? I couldn’t see anything on the website. (But its late after a long week and some rum! )

My green card is the probationary one that we have to apply to be made permanent within 90 days of the 2 years.

W.

Pilot Wolf…uscis.gov/green-card/after-g … d-marriage.

check out the USCIS website and look at green card tab , hope this helps.
ray

I knew about that bit and the date is on the calender already! I have the conditional card as we hadn’t been married 2 years when I applied.

It was the bit about the filing for citizenship after 2 years I could see anywhere.

Thanks.

W.

Pilot Wolf …I think you got to be married at least 2yrs before you can apply for citizenship.
ray

It’s 3 as far as I can work out… :frowning:

W.

Pilot Wolf…you are right , don’t know where I got the 2 yrs from must have had a senior moment .
