I doubt this thread is drawing to a close, but just in case, there’s one important thing to remember…
A Gardner Engined Lorry would alsways be the first to arrive at its destination, the true leader of the pack…
Because everything else had caught it on the first hill and was stuck behind it
■■■■■■■■, I drove a 4 wheeler Atki with a 5 Pot Gardner & going over Standege on the old A 62 with 10 Ton on I only dropped one gear, & went all the way up at 21 MPH, So what was wrong with that in 1957, Regards Larry
Oh dear Larry, you should hang your head in shame, only 10 tons on the back, no wonder you were quick Mind you, you say you only dropped one cog, you didn’t have a two speed gearbox did you

hiya,
Bloody hell Larry you was capable of being pulled for speeding,
that was dodgy in those halycon days of yore.
thanks harry, long retired.
Not many engines have a Gardner’s ability to run backwards and then carry on in a normal manner as if nothing untoward had happened.(apart from a cab full of smoke!!)
Cheers Bassman

A bloody Perkins P6 could, I know, it terrified the life out of me, I was only a lad at the time. Sodding thing it was.
no bother brian , stall the bloody thing in top gear , restart ( if the battery wasn’t flat ) and carry on regardless . a few bum clenching moments trying to get it in gear while it was screaming it’s head off . oh and don’t forget to put some more oil in the air filter bath . i only had it happen in a j type bedford so the smoke didn’t get in the cab very much , cheers , dave

The first time it happened to me was in a 5 pot in an oud Atki.It frightened the s…t out of me,I didn’t know an engine could do that.
Back around 1950 here in the US a haulier ordered some lorries from Corbitt truck makers and he had gardner engines put in them. Later, when asked how they were doing he would say the drivers complain they cannot keep the engines wound up.

I doubt this thread is drawing to a close,
It has run for 20-odd pages, sometimes backwards but mostly forwards, slowly. Nobody will be able to kill it!
While all the time thinking about what might have been if only they’d have built that 320 hp 6LXB that could run all day at 3,000 rpm,at least going forwards, that never was.
As an ex owner driver/fitter i would never consider a truck powered by a Gardner,I could not afford the oil! and delivering tarmac with a truck dripping oil would get you run off the job.■■■■■■■ lover

Thats a new one,how many Gardner engined chassis did Tarmac Roadstone run ? Cheers Bewick.
No idea but in the midlands Tarmac fleet i dont remember anybody having Gardner engines, mind you most of them were behind me S80 Foden with a 290 14 litre ■■■■■■■

Fair enough, probably some of the other Tipper lads on the thread can give a more definative answer, but tell me,would the motor immediately behind you would have always had to be a Derv tanker ■■ Cheers Bewick.
Let me tell you a story,I worked alongside a mate with 180 Garder on the same job.We filled up in the morning and again after the days work.Guess who put the most fuel in? Plus he had to put lots of oil in Up hills at least 2 higher gears. The last Garder i worked on was a 4lk at Richard Reads fitted in a ex tool sales lorry. He still owns it,well i saw it in the yard in Longhope last year.

Seeing is believing I suppose ! but the 290 Sed Atk demos that we ran occaisionally “drank” fuel, they couldn’t get anywhere near the 8LXB’s or the 111’s for economy, and they were always given a very fair “shake of the dice”,the ■■■■■■■ 250 was a thirsty beggar as well IMHO. Cheers Bewick.
