fridged freight

Some real pictures here and the 6 legger 89 very rare, the fridge built on a flat trailer, that must be heavy, if lookes like a canvas roof on the fridge??.Maybe to get the steel lifted in Wheelnut

They were reputed to run very heavy and it was suggested that they would have a load of steel on the floor with hanging beef or lambs in the roof.

It never happened ,as wheelnut said how do you get it in or out, fridge floors are pretty delicate,
What vet would ever do a health cert, or put a seal on lamb/beef n steel in same trl, as was needed years ago,

I have seen box beef on the floor with hanging above it which can end up very heavy.
ALso have had boxes nearly to the roof in front 3rd of the trailer then hanging on the back which grossed 38ton in the 32 ton days i was also 20ton empty in those days with the meat railers, i got shipped back to Ireland from Holyhead with that load, and shipped direct to France.

I think it might be an F88 as to my knowledge Volvo never made any right hand drive 89’s I stand to be corrected but as far as I know it was something to do with the engine being in the way, hence the F88 290 UK market only

I stand corrected John its a rhd F88 240hp one of the older ones with the silver grill , the later 240s had black grill as below, still rare as a 6 legger double drive though

KW:
As a matter of interest, where was this pic taken? It is obviously a border crossing, but where?

I would guess at one of the Swiss border’s, with the sign having German, Italian and English wording.

I did a few trips to Italy in an early 240 and I must say I did like it, it had the 16 speed box which helped, I remeber one night reaching the top of Mont Cenis and she refused to come out of stick so I had to kip down for the night and all was well the following morning. Theres a picture on one of the M/E threads of that little F88 in Eaglewing livery, and here it is 2nd pic down, oh by the way that’s not me standing in front of it, my legs are not as good as those! toprun.ch/truck/04-2005/Volv … iewer.html

To put the record straight, the one i drove first was an AEC Mammoth Major 6 , that was a 6x2 with trailing axle (terrible in the wet) it weighed 21 tons empty due to the amount of strengthening built into the body work which were mostly built by Norwich Coach works, the chassis being home built in the workshops at Diss, then came promotion to HVF 111D an 8 wheel tilt cab MM8 that pulled a draw bar trailer and weigher in at 24 tons empty, after that i got TVF 350G a Scania-Vabis 6x2 with drawbar which was a bit of a lightweight at 21 tons as well, finally i ended up with ANG333J the last Volvo bought by Wyatts. in spite of all the stories that abound concerning this firm i enjoyed my time there immensly and would not have left had they not gone into liquidation(and that is another story). The trailer i had behind ANG which was a 6x2 tractor unit was built in Diss and was 45’ long internally.

theres an 8 page article on fridged freight in truck and driver this month with some cracking photos

Quite possibly, but I think the sign say’s ‘Alt-Dognana-Stop’,which makes it Italian.

Funny how old connections turn up. In the early 1980s, I bought an A-frame trailer with a cattle box on it. Turned out the trailer was built by Wyatts, on old AEC bus hubs, no matter what we did, it used brake linings faster than the truck did diesel. I remember a report in Commercial Motor in the early 70s, regarding a public enquiry into the said firm, the TC had complained about Mr Wyatts habit of building his own trailers, which were too big and too heavy, the TC was correct on the second count, mind you ,the chassis was industructable. In fact it is still serving a farmer well as a bale trailer to this day.

can enyone remember a diss haulage firm called keith anderson transport he used to cart concrete beams from lenwade nr norwich

It was owned by my best mates grandad. They finished ages ago. They were one of the first U.K firms to do Europen, i remember seeing a photo of a truck and trailer of theirs being lifted onto the ferry! Will try to get some info etc from my mate. There was a firm called T.J Wyatt from Snetterton Norfolk who did regular runs to Portugal in the nineties, they ran mainly F12"s. Well the boss of them was Tim Wyatt, who was a son of the bloke who started Fridged Freight. T.J Wyatt eventually sold out to Matthews of Great Yarmouth. Will try to get more info from my mate, but he lives in London, so dont get to see him a lot nowadays.

hi kindle530, chris wyatt was the son, tim wyatt is a nephew, his dad was pearn wyatt, johns brother.

Hello, Wyatt206, Bobby Martin must be retired now I hope he is ok. The first time I went abroad, apart from holidays, was doubled up with Bob in LIIITJW, this was just after Trevor Matthews took over Tim Wyatt. I was at Perfects at the time and I had to collect a customer’s crane from a drilling rig site in the Basque area of Spain. Bob was loaded for Portugal and the site was not far off his route so Trevor suggested we double-manned. We got off the ferry at Caan and humpted it through to a motel where I was to be picked up in a car the following morning, a long day but I couldn’t have gone with a better bloke.
Did you used to drive that F88 in the picture?, if so I think we know each other. Regards Haddy, Gt.Yarmouth.

Hello there. My name is Leigh Trevail and I live near Diss, I have known Chris Wyatt since the late seventies. I have already published a book on the Eastern Counties Motor Club which both John & Ben Wyatt were involved with, both feature in the book. I am now putting together information on the garages & filling stations in the Diss area, hopefully another book will materialise from this. Please could I use some of your photos that show Fourways Garage? Regards Leigh
