fridge men

Well it was actually just on the road next to a kerb, I doubt the council would allow him to just park in the road & operate from there.

I did just move which I didn’t mind doing but a bit of lucid explanation & civility for dragging me out of bed would have helped. The tax disc enables me to park on any road, so “the spot” isn’t his spot at all. I did almost gob off at him but that wouldn’t have been a wise move in hind sight as he would have known all the blokes where I was tipping, they’d have probly kept me waiting all day.

The tax disc does not allow you to park on any road. In fact you can be done for obstruction by parking on any road. marked parking bays on a road is ok but the police can move anybody on if they are parked on a road and yes that even means outside your house!

And this is the trouble on here to many do gooders and hobby bobbies. We all know he did not mean anywhere and that he actually meant anywhere legal FFS. The police never seem to move me on when parked illegally, I have even dropped my Drag in the middle of a road in London and got no hassle off the police. Lighten up and chill

Many years ago I had to drop a drag outside of a building site in Cambridge or some such place but the problem was two fold,1~it was double yellows and 2~ there was a brace of traffic wardens kicking about…Well,I explained the situation and they said no problem,we can see the situation and we can’t ticket the trailer anyway as it doesn’t have a tax disc.

Traffic wardens also told me that so ever since then

It is good fun listening to them on the radio trying to figure out what they could do, on Monday there were three of them in London debating the issue, there were parking bays on either side of a single, so I dropped drag on the yellow line and one of the fittters parked his car in the parking bay in front so I could pick it up again.

Personally I don’t have a problem sleeping while parked next to them.

Currently do general haulage, but last night parked up in services and parked between 2of them (late parking). Had both windows slightly open and the roof hatch open, slept no problem at all.

Trailer swaps on the other hand :unamused:

We got a load of new Carriers @ 13.7 meter, very quiet, the TM tells us when they run full speed they’re only at 49 decibels.
I remember parking at the truck stop on the west side of Geneva about 20 years ago and I could hear the fridges on the other side of the motor way running, and that was over the noise of my own fridge…

Jeff…

I never minded fridges much when I was tramping - you can get used to constant noise. The people who annoyed me were the ones who did trailer swaps and left their engines running while they did it, as often as not with the cab radio on very loud and the driver’s door left open. Thoughtless people always irritate me, especially if they’ve woken me up at two in the morning.

Or drivers having a very loud conversation when drivers around them are asleep.Engines left running on idle for 20 minutes or more.
If it takes that long to get the air up, the truck should be off the road.Radio on full blast too.

I tow a fridge trailer, but it’s always empty when I park up, I park away from other fridges.

The look on some peoples faces as you start to reverse into the bay between them is worth doing the job for :smiling_imp:

Yes i’m always empty too and other drivers do tend to give you dirty looks when you wedge yourself in between curtainsiders for the night.

Read the post properly-He said the tax disc enables to park on ANY road. Anywhere legal would not be on any road. I just pointed out the facts. I have parked on a road and not been done but don’t mean to say it’s legal. I’m certainly no do gooder or hobby bobby but I do like to know the law when it applies to me.

Like you say the fridge motor isn’t a problem once you’re used to it . . . when the motor stops in the middle of your sleep is when the real problems begin.

I currently do reefer trailer swaps in the middle of the night, most of the time on deserted supermarket carparks or at the peage. Some drivers I meet are so used to night work they forget that the rest of the world is asleep, so thankfully we do our changeovers well away from civilisation!

We’re all “professional” drivers on here Ron, you were being pedantic. I know I can’t park up for the night in the fast lane of the M6. :unamused: (That’s me being sarcastic).

With regards to fridge trailers, they are a necessity & I appreciate noise is part & parcel of the job but some blokes can be dicks just for the sake of it (I have pulled fridges before on numerous occasions & was as considerate as possible when doing it because i’m a decent human being with a dose of empathy). Like has been said at Rugby there’s a sign saying, please park at the top of the yard if you have a fridge should be no problem…

A bit of consideration towards your fellow man doesn’t cost anything, If there’s no room away from other trucks & there’s nothing more you can do then you’re more than welcome to park next to me for the night.

The new ones are super quiet anyway, it’s just if you get an old un rattling away that can be annoying, some people can sleep through anything where as others find it more difficult to sleep through fridge noise.

Yeah I know you didn’t mean anywhere. What I was trying to point out that parking anywhere on the public highway actually constitutes an offence. thats not just for lorries but for any vehicle. People think that because their are no yellow lines/parking restrictions then it is ok to park but the police are entitled to move you on or prosecute you.
I only know this because many years ago a mate ■■■■■■ off a copper so the copper gave him a ticket for obstruction even though he was parked on the road in a cul de sac outside his house and their were no parking restrictions in force and he was not blocking the road or anyone in.He took the matter to court and lost.

Regarding fridges which is what the original post was about. They don’t bother me one bit and I can sleep like a log with one parked next to me.

Ok, I see your point!

[Playing Devil’s Advocate here, please don’t kill me]

Wouldn’t most trailers hold temperature to allow them to be switched off for at least part of the night?

Depends on the age of the fridge etc to be honest mate. I’ve had one of our fairly new fridges on before and it’s switched itself off (i.e. it was all up to temperature) as I’ve coupled up and after an hours drive to a store it’s not started back up yet.

On the other hand I had a 9 year old Tesco fridge on the other week roaring it’s guts out and struggled to pull temperature.

It all depends on the age and condition of the fridge, i.e. if it’s a multi-temp, how good the bulkhead doors are and how temperature sensitive the load is.

I’ve always thought someone making a truckstop should invest in some spaces with caravan plug ins, I’ve seen them on 3.5T fridge vans so I assume the trailers will carry them to, allow the fridges to plug into the mains so the donkey engine can be switched off.

Bit more than a 240V 13A plug I’m afraid mate. All our fridges (Carriers) have a standby plug. It’s a red one with 5 pins as a pose to the blue 3 pin caravan type ones. I think that means it’s 415V but I could be wrong.

Once again not all fridges have them. Someone got in a bit of trouble over sending an old fridge without an electric plug to the Isle of Man recently. Apparently they got charged extra because it had to go as previously unagreed deck cargo or something?

I will always try my best to park away from other trucks unless they’re running a fridge. I totally get it !!!

However, I had some French driver in a euroliner waving his arms and complaining a few nights back after I’d parked on an industrial estate ready for my first tip in the morning. I had the fridge set at -25 so it was running most of the night. I could have understood his annoyance if he’d parked up there first be he hadn’t, I’d already been there a good few hours. It’s not the first time I’ve had to listen to moaning from other drivers. It’s quite simple I think. If the fridge running annoys you then don’t park next to me !!!

Depending on what I’m carrying and if the fridge does hold its temperature well I have turned the fridge off on some occassions. If it’s something like returns I’ve collected which have been rejected, but not very often, it depends on another drivers attitude. Behaviour breeds behaviour after all !

and on that note thank you to the ■■■■■■ that as just parked next to me in a class 2 van with his fridge blasting away and a empty truck park to choose from…

I love the look but then I inform them that I am empty and that fridge is off.

When it is on I park elsewhere but when it is off I park between other trucks that don’t have a fridge. I am like fly’s on ■■■■. If I park alone they tend to park near me, which I don’t mind.

Thank you Lankyphil, that’s a very good and complete reply

I stopped at Southwaite the other morning on way back to jockland and a fridge guy parked right in middle of the trailer park , fridge running , unit running , radio blasting , I shook my head at him when I came back from the services and he pulled a what the f… face at me , total donkey no respect for others
