Hi All, I’m trying to get on a Gov’t funded “bootcamp” scheme.
My basic question is; “Which companies are providing the training?” … I guess it could be training companies or fleet operators…?
My job centre are next to useless at giving me relevant information, and the Gov’t website just sends me round in circles! gov.uk/government/publicati … -bootcamps
“Recently announced Skills Bootcamps in HGV driving are due to be added to this list in November…”
I live in the W.Midlands but I’m interested in all areas.
Many thanks for any answers.

In the same boat as you, same story here in W.Yorks
Was thinking about blagging a crisis loan to pay for a course and then pay it back as soon as possible but will have to wait til after November the 15th anyway and I guess you’re in the same boat there aswell.
Goff118:
Would an interest free credit card be possible for you? Far less hoops to jump through if so.
flammen:
Maybe… I wouldn’t know the first place to look though and I doubt I’d be a “risk free” customer, in their eyes anyway.
Have to say - following this post, I had a chat with a few local hauliers pre booking my c+e training and test & CPC course, just to ensure they’d take me on if I did lay out the cash.
I was reassured that if I was prepared to pay, they were prepared to set me on, so I booked my training.
Initially my test was booked for 2nd December and I was going to be one of the first to do the new, 2 part test - part a off road, part b on road - unfortunately the truck I was learning in broke down the day before my test but luckily I’d done my off road bits already. My part b on road test was rebooked for the 15th December, after 1 more lesson in a different truck - and I’m absolutely thrilled to say I passed.
I’ve since been offered 4 jobs - but have finally accepted an offer with WS Transportation who I’ve been hoping to get on with for years.
My advice is this - if you want it, do it. There are 100’s of jobs out there, just decide what it is you want to do.

15 months to get a licence that normally takes less than 2 weeks training. Do the maths and figure out how much you could have earned in 15 months.
In my mind, this is very expensive training. Far from free.
Just my opinion.
Pete S
Totally agree.
Also examiners and training centres can not even keep up with the demand of actual people PAYING for their own courses. What’s the waiting time to get training now like 3 months?
I feel this money should be spent more on examiners in particular paying them a decent wage. I looked into it a few weeks ago and they are only on like 24k a year. Maybe extra grants for training centres as well for expansion. Or better yet more testing centres.
The backlog is not going to be fixed by giving away free training. Once they have got the supply/demand situation under control they can start talking about free training.
Personally though, I do not think it should be free.
Hi all, I’ve recently applied to try and get ADR training via this scheme and have completed the online personality “test”. Has anyone had any success with this free government training arrangement?
They seem very vague on the ADR training, have you had anything more definite than this ?
Fuel tanker drivers need additional safety qualifications, which the government will work with industry to ensure drivers can access as quickly as possible.

When I applied online I had to input my licence number, after a day or so someone rang me up for a chat. She said she could see I already had my class 1 so put me down for ADR training which came in three parts. I then had to do a “personality test” online which was accepted and I’m now waiting on the next step. I’m half expecting to never hear from them again tbh.
I’m pleased to see some positive reports, at last, about bootcamps. The overwhelming feel is that they are incredibly slow and often handled by third parties with little industry knowledge.
To me, the sums are simple. Worst case scenario is sub £4k for CE from car. It’s not impossible to earn this in a month and it’s highly likely it will be covered in 6 or 7 weeks’ pay.
So the obvious way forward is an interest free credit card, get the training done, get earning and pay the card pronto.
I’ve been enrolled in my works training program since the 26th of june 2021 and I definitely feel like I have gotten nowhere The only thing that’s happened is they set up an account for me to practice the theory and hazard tests which I had already passed and I’ve completed some initial basic english and maths assessments. It feels like it’s a waste of time.
I’m sick of it all, Waiting around endlessly is definitely not worth it so I booked everything myself, medical, theory, hazard, cpc and am currently waiting for my C+E test in july In hindsight I should have gone it alone from the start. There is a very good chance I would be in work now.
It was never about saving the money either because it’s just sat in the bank but I thought doing it through work would be an easier option. Straight into a job where I am now too plus less responsibility organising it all but to be honest it’s been a breeze doing it myself.
Good to hear you’re finally getting somewhere. Also that you’ve found the process ok to handle. But there’s plenty of folk who struggle with sorting out what to book, how and when. And that’s where a complete service, such as offered by PSTT, is so helpful. All you do is register, give availability and the rest will happen.

Got to agree with this.
The cost of doing my C and then C&E in total, came to 3 weeks wages when I started my class 1 job.
I passed on the Thursday, interview Friday and started a week on the next Monday. So 10 days from pass to driving. 3 weeks later, licence costs covered.
It really is a no brainer.

I think it’s dangerous to assume that this is the norm. I’m not saying newbies won’t find work, but in my case straight to CE (with months of C1 experience) C work was a lot easier to get than CE.
I’ve just had a telephone interview which supposedly went OK and have been accepted onto the program. The training provider (HGVT) will be in touch with me soon to arrange, in the mean time I’ve got to sign certain agreements stating that I’m going to be committed to the course which involves 20 hours of online learning at home and a 4 day course I’ll need to attend.
When the course is completed I’ve got to agree to attend interviews with prospective employers although I’ve let them know that the jobs offered have to be better than the one I already have.
From what I’ve seen an ADR entitlement doesn’t necessarily mean the rate will be any good.
Quick update, I hadn’t heard anything back and found my online account had been deactivated when I tried to log in! I emailed them and they reactivated it but despite ringing nothing has progressed regarding training. Previously Manpower seemed more interested in obtaining my CV more than anything, which seems pointless at this stage as I haven’t received any training.
I get the feeling that this is all going to lead to a bit of a dead end but I’ll update if and when anything happens.
