The ford cargo was 1 of the crappest trucks on the road

The ford cargo was 1 of the crappest trucks on the road
also one of the lightest, and the most power as a 6 wheeler for quarry tipper work !!
a lot of hauliers round these parts did v well operating the ford cargo, the parts wern’t to expensive and they were quite simple to work on, once fitted with a jake brake the things were as fast downhill as uphill
on the downside the cab tinwork was to thin and as a result the rot could be a problem from the underside
from an operators point of veiw the cargo was a fine machine when it came to proffit !.. you may well know far more about the cargo tho !!
Hello everyone

Indeed so! As always people will compare them to Volvo’s and Scania’s, which is stupid. They were not meant to compete with the higher marque’s and fitted the bill perfectly (as did the D-Series) as a more prosaic day-to-day truck. As a six-wheel tipper, unrivalled imo, as a tractor, yes, not particularly good, but reliable, cheap and a good profit earner all the same for those that chose to operate them. I remember the Owner Operator’s that worked out of Bullimore’s quarry at Collyweston in North Northants that had the Six-Wheelers and they swore by them. A couple of those chaps had the 2428’s with the 290 ■■■■■■■ lumps in them, and in my gutless FL7 8-Wheeler at the time, I would compare notes and betray a green-face at the Cargo Operators! They would annihilate any other six-wheeler on acceleration and payload; but yes, the steel work was sub-standard and the rot would set in quickly if you didn’t have a regime in place to stop it!. One chap swore by steam cleaning his cab/chassis through the Winter months every 3-days to keep the rust out. Comparing a Ford Cargo to a Scania or Volvo, is like comparing a Ford Cortina to a Volvo Car or Saab. All are good mechanically, but the Volvo and Saab have far better steelwork and lasted much longer…and I would still put a Pinto engine as one of the best Petrol’s with frequent oil/spraybar changes!!
Robal51:
Recognise this?.
It is Fords latest lightweight truck in Brazil. I don’t think the original European Ford Cargo range has ever been out of production over there. Although the heavier models have now changed, the name lives on.
Bob.
The first ones bumper has a very transcontinental look about it.

I have to concur with the comments made by Moose as I ran with those haulier’s! They were nearly a ton up on payload compared to my Foden six wheeler (running at 26 tonne gross) and my 250 L10 couldn’t live with them on hills. However I believe that the ride quality wasn’t good as they lacked a sprung cab but otherwise they did the job just fine, prefered the comfort and room of the Foden myself though.
Pete.
Pete the foden was a more expensive truck to start with and rightly so as they were a better built truck which would last for years!
at the time when it came to £’s per ton moved the cargo was a cracker
mr wayne still has his cargo though not on the road at this time

Oh I agree with you Moose, pound for pound you couldn’t beat them! Just being an employed driver I liked the Foden, but the Cargo would have made me more money as I was paid on earnings. Ford got it just right with that model, especially the ones with the rubber back end, and the ■■■■■■■ L10 had to be the best engine around at that time for a 26 tonne tipper. They filled the gap left by the Leyland Reiver I guess, a fairly basic truck with excellent payload. Pleased that JD still has his, a candidate for ‘Classic Commercial’ events nowadays! Hope that Chris is keeping well.
Pete.
Hello everyone

Hello Dave
Thankyou for that. I wonder if the farmer uses it on hay haulage in the summer with it been a drawbar?
