Foden Thoughts

Re the Black Cat theft, would that’ve happened early '90s? There were a few Foden thefts around here at that time, Dad had his 8wheeler nicked, days after it was upgraded to 32t mgw. Rumour was it was someone with Foden connections?

Isherwoods Petrol Company Ltd operated this Foden S24 eight wheeler 4000 gallon capacity fuel tanker Reg No CAX 135B.
Powered by a Mark 7 Foden two stroke engine it was registered new in Monmouthshire on the 14th of October 1964 and worked out of Isherwoods Barry depot South Wales.
It is pictured here during a Foden publicity shot when brand new at Isherwoods Heavily Garage on the A6 between Manchester and Hazel Grove which was also a Ford dealer at the time.
Another picture and details can be found here on Flickr

Thought I would post these pics of an old Foden dumped on Poddington Airfield some years ago. It was used to extend the runway in preparation for Santa Pod dragster track.

Apart from the cab and the single rear wheels those dumpers didn’t change much visually over the years! We had a few at the quarry with the steel half cab and ■■■■■■■ engines but chassis wise they were very much the same as the one in the photo.

In Classic Truck there’s a good feature on Coopers Of Killamarshs’ F reg Foden S108, still used when needed. My first lorry was one like it, which the wife says “proves I’m an old git when lorries I’ve driven appear in classic magazines.”
I thought that applied to fairground vehicles.

See them on a regular basis Muckaway only a few miles away in Maltby.I think they have a 05 on the road that i had not seen before i will have to get a shot of it.They go in to Holme Hall Quarry ex Butlers,Tarmac and now Hope.

Paul they were in a “Truck Trial” in Trucking last year; Foden Alpha v Hino 700. The Foden won.
I think the Hino driver reckoned his earlier Foden was a better truck than the Hino too.

Used to run with Cooper’s lads occasionally if I was loading in their area and they were OK, didn’t rip and tear arse about like some folk I could mention! The fleet always looked well cared for, they run some MAN’s as well.

We had this one for a while, was a beast of a motor, went like the scolded cat pigeon wind, but ate Tyres and brakes…

" but ate Tyres and brakes… "

Maybe more indicative of your ( and Tubby’s ) driving style Danny !!!

And i don’t mean that in a bad way, but you were both renowned for not hanging about…

I drove past Smiths Bletchingtons’ HQ yesterday; One of the last Fodens built is now parked up and devoid of signwriting. Where’ve ten years gone?

You’ll just have to pluck up courage Nathan and drive into their yard and ask if they will start you back, they might even re-letter that last Foden to give you a trial for a bit eh! Cheers Dennis.

Sorry Steve, not guilty in this case, only had a go in it a few times, I loved driving it even with the awful stiff cable change. Dad hated it for some reason… he did buy it cheap as a ■■■■■■ back and had it tickled up at rainham ■■■■■■■■ But it never grew on him.

Several of his drivers enjoyed the difference between it and the MANs mind you

It came home on 1100 x 22 Tyres and did used to maul through them, I can’t remember the exact mileage it used to get out of drive axle Tyres but was pretty scary… even the old man said “barely worth cutting the bloody Tyres as they’ll be bald at Dover”

I think I’ll settle for visiting their quarries once or twice a day Dennis.

This was the Foden I drove on Tanker then General and Tipper work for about 4 years
from 1970 until our first DAF 2800 was delivered.
The Foden in the photographs is in 2 liveries as you can see.
First was Hudson then Scomo’s.

Going through some of my late father’s photos it’s from the late 60’s and is the team from Foden’s depot Darlington, pre CTS.

Is that depot what later became North Riding Garages at Middleton St George? If so when I worked for Tilcon I used to take some of our Foden S50 halfcabs there to be overhauled and fitted with the later S40 full cab. When it closed some of the fitters joined Tilcon’s surfacing gang.
