Foden Thoughts

STRAIGHT EIGHT:
4 brake chambers, exhaust & box, track control arm, power steering ram has just cost our firm £4000, we priced the equivalent parts for my EC11 and it came in at just over £1500. The ‘crimped’ together exhaust box and taillpipe was £500 on its own, 300 more expensive. The whole life costs of the Fodens and ERF’s are way cheaper than the Scania’s, they are so over priced on parts and new Chassis. And when are their engineers going to re-desingn that bloody front panel on the R series, so the doors dont rub them when they opened??, we have 9 of 'em and they all do it, for money they charge you would think get poor build quality nowdays. King of the road my arse, they are no better than anything else. :unamused:

Got to agree scanias arent king of the road anymore.Never heard of the doors rubbing on the front panel unless the drivers are careless especially in windy conditions

Yes there was a time when Scanias were ok, but after the launch of the 4 series they seemed to climb so far up their own arse, and ask stupid premiums for their vehicles that they just dont warrent.
Scania seem oblivious to the fact that over the past few years all the manufacturers now make a truck equal to a Scania and in many case alot better. None are perfect im not saying that, they al have their own faults but i do get tired of hearing how good they are and are better than anything else.

I`ve seen an 8 wheeler and trailer Foden twice last week it had the last version of the proper Foden cab with the high roof (not cf85 type cab),it looked very impressive ,it was on the M1 - A1 link road i didnt get a proper look at it so no more info yet

I saw this motor again today, its an 8 wheeler brick carrier with a tri axle trailer it belongs to Brian Peers of Leeds ,it was on the M1 - A1 link road ,he keeps it looking well its white with a blue chassis anyone know anything about it?

we still get a lot of fodens through the doors at work wouldnt thinkl they stoped production 6 years ago!

I suppose aslong as the CF cab is produced you could keep one going. I think the CF cab is easier to keep clean because of the fairings on the doors and the small deflectors fitted to the front cab corners. I think the Foden version is better looking though

one we see is a early 4000 with a gardener but i agree about the foden version of the cf cab looking better

The last Gardner powered foden I have seen was an E reg what’s that 87/88.

This is the first foden i rode in many moons ago.

Hi Billy, this Foden really does look the part, and it reminds me of the time I did long loads (concrete beams) from Dowmacs Eaglescliffe when I was a lad at Elliotts of York. The ■■■■■■■ powered S39 will also sound the part but its expensive fun at 5/6 miles to the gallon. But nevertheless with the bogie and all tackled up it is a very good reminder of how it used to be done !
Regards Tony H.

A few days off, washed an on its way to Llandudno for the weekend, you dont realise how ■■■■ your paint job is till you intend on polishing!!!

I hope the weather dries up for you and the other people that put a lot of time and effort into running and taking part in these shows Sepo.
Cheers Dave.

Me to Dave… maybe this cold snap they sats coming might be good, at least the ground will be firm an quite often we get a bit of blue sky with a cold morning, have a good weekend y’self. Cheers Sepo

A rare Beast!

I remember seeing many Fodens that had a Cat engine more powerful than a 300 it had “Big Cat” slogan on the grille. Must’ve been the “530 V8” of the '80s…

Another rare 1, gota be for Australia, but I actually quite like it

Heres a old truck from works past

Not been a good day for Smiths Fodens; I went in with engine trouble, to be greeted with all 3 of our 03 regs in the workshop. 1x8w for servicing, 1x8w with no low range, and the 6w with gearbox trouble (valve). Next minute, Volvo rep turns up with an FM Globetrotter 450 with IShift.
