Fitting air horns

Your options are limited. It depends if you mean proper horns or the cheap ones with a piddly compressor.
Proper air horns:
It’s the law that twin Hadley’s on the roof are reserved for tipper drivers that spend all day cutting people up,then blast them when someone cuts THEM up.
Do not cut into the air system unless you know what you’re doing. It’s best left to the workshop, and by the time you’ve bought the horns and solenoid and various gubbins and paid for fitting it would probably be cheaper to buy a different make of dustcart.
Some people T them into the seat circuit, which is ok,but if you lean on them long enough you can’t see over the dashboard.
Cheap horns:
I fitted a set to a Eurocargo tractor unit to replace the silly car horn they come with. They worked well for a month or so then you could hardly hear it.

There are some around 100 quid I think that come with a compressor strapped to a little receiver, which are probably you’re best bet.

Hadleys are only one up from the standard horns ,Desilux are what you need .

Thanks guys for all your input, i think i will just wait till i drive a proper lorry with them fitted already.

Get some Intercity 125 train air horns, they are the dogs testicles and will budge Madge and Arthur out of the way , on their annual motorway drive to the garden center , to buy a potted plant for Aunt Maggie , who lives 70 miles away, in their Nissan Micra , with a Trilby hat on the back shelf and a bag of toffees on the dash .

Its what i have , i retrofitted them from my old F12 to my FH, theyre triple trumpet usa style train horns. I dont have the airtank they run off a large air pump, 126db i think theyre rated at, good for stopping in the event of brake failure, they’ll blow the truck backwards… :grimacing:

-If you link them to a tank that is not isolated from the brake system eg suspension or auxiliary then you will be getting a PG 9 and going home on the back of a wrecker.

“my” truck has a piddly little perp perp horn but i want to fit air horns

Good call.
When someone cuts you up and you blast the horn, you want something that screams “Im gonna get out this cab and rip your [zb] head off” not the usual custom fit job that squeaks “Im gonna tell my mum”

Someone did this to me in roadworks the other week. I was driving an actros at the time. Just had to flash like a mad man and hope they saw, because there was no way in hell I was giving the horn a smash. My car has more balls than that thing!!

Presumably not driving a DAF or Scania. Their electric horns are loud enough surely? Fitting one of their horns instead should be a lot easier.

if you are driving a merc axctros, they have to settings for the horns, Im calling mummy and Big Butch Bernie. its on the dashboard.

But if you were a professional driver, you would read the road and not need to use the horn

Right mate here’s a serious reply that may actually help you. You don’t need the air horns with a piggy back compressor!
Take an air feed from the rear of your drivers seat, run it up to the roof (obviously under the roof lining via drivers foot well & up the pillar post) if your using simple horns with no electric motor all you need is the air feed & a actuator chain something like what the rubber duck uses in convoy no electric needed it just works a lever to allow air past when you pull it & stop the air when you leave go. If you buy one with an electronic actuator then you can use the original horn wiring & run that up to the roof along with the air feed from the drivers seat & connect them up. You’ll need to drill ur roof & get hold of some 8mm rivnuts to put in the holes you will have just drilled. Then simply bolt ur horns down put all ur covers back on & bosh jobs a gooden! UNLESS you buy two tone horns… these are illegal to have as ur main horn & will fail an MOT.

Thankyou again for replies, i went for a loud horn instead of air horns. The ones albion suggested work just dine. They have the desired effect without breaking the bank acount.
