Can anyone else recall Fearns Tankers of Barnsley ? they used too run chemicals allover the UK with predominantly green & red livery, they seemed too have loads of tractor units based just off J37 M1 plus a little haulage yard nearby too. I can remember them having Dafs, Scania & Mans in there fleet mainly, and the owner steven used too have a 1930s Leyland tanker to shows etc…i know him and his son richard still attend Truckfests etc …I can’t recall the name of the company that bought them out now but they ran after in all white liverys.

they any good.

Nice photo of the Atkis RR,I remember Fearns well when they were at Dodworth. :sunglasses: Wincanton bought them in the 90s and I may be wrong, but dropped the “A” out of the name and running as Fern Transport.Anybody know if they are still going under that name or is it Lambson Transport now?
Was along time ago,in the 60s and 70s when I was running with them. They did a lot for Hickson and Welch,Castleford and Staveley Chemicals.

Hi Road Ranger, First of all there were two parts to Fearns, Fearns Tankers & Fearns Transport which was the Flat beds, As i remember the Atkinson in the first picture is HWB 216 N when it was new, I drove this for a short time after it was repainted later in life with yellow flashes up the sides, do you remember them, HWB 216N was the second truck to be painted white & blue with the parent company name of Lambson, More on this if your interested let me know.

Back to the fleet: 2 Atkinson, 1 Seddon-Atkinson, 3 Volvo F88, 1 Daf, 1 Roman, 1 Fiat 170NT 2 Scania 111, & loads of Man’s

I moved on to Lambson Group, after that Stephen Fearn was left with part of the Transport side & the tankers were bought out by Wincanton, they closed Dodworth & moved to Morley, After that Wincanton sold out to Suttons. Cheers Mel

thanks for that about the atki. i will put it on the back of the photo. its a good pic to see what atkis had when new when it comes to restoring them. i dont remember them myself bit before my time. my dad dose tho, do you recall a chap called Frank Beevers from wath? dad says he think that chap used to work for fearns? then moved to the ncb at manvers. he seems to think they used to have more atki’s too? or Brit trucks?

Hi, I don’t recall Frank Beevers or never herd anyone mention him in my time there, but now we have the ball rolling who knows who’s names may crop up i am doing a list now of all the ones i can remember, the did have more Atkinsons but they also kept quite a modern fleet also in the last post i forgot to mention there was 1 Foden

I can recall Arnie worked at Fearns but not when, I worked with him At Pickfords, Sykes (Shaws) and Bill Brennans and Chris worked with him at Evans I think it was proberly in the 90s after we got made redundent at Brennans

Fearns also ran coaches until the late '60’s, early '70’s from the small yard opposite Dodworth war memorial. Going back much further, I have a photo of an Albion Caledonian 8-legger dropside with a tilt rail down the middle. In the seventies, they had an assortment of Leyland 4-wheel flats and a Foden S80 tractor with the name “Yorkshire Rose” painted under the windscreen. They had a Volvo F88 painted red, grey and white which I think worked on the Hickson and Welch contract. A couple of drivers were the Bartholomew brothers, Eric and Alan. The main yard at Dodworth is now B&B Trucks (ERF/MAN and agricultural) and the smaller yard mentioned before is now the CO-OP supermarket.

Do you mean Arnie Green Sammie? If so,he was a great bloke and was shop steward at Evans for a while. He was a big pal of Billy Walker and used to live on Norfolk Park.He was still at Evans in 1979 when I left and I reckon he went to Fearns or Ferns in the early 90s before Cannotwin took them over.

HI to you All, Just had half hour on the phone with Stephen, he didn’t know about this great site we have here, i have arranged to meet with him to get some photos to upload for you all to see in the next two weeks Cheers Mel

Thats right Chris he came to Sykes with Pancho then he was at Bill Brennans so it must have been after that as that was my last stint on tankers

Hi Mel.
Next time you speak to Stephen ask him if he’s any photos of the two LWB 8-leggers,Atkis IIRC,that were in Staveley Chemicals yellow livery running crude benzole into Staveley in the 60s and 70s.I can’t recall the driver’s names, can’t think why,I saw and spoke to them often enough whilst tipping in there.

Cheers,

Chris.

Hi Chris, At my time the three i remember most doing the crude was: Tommy Mann a small guy looked a bit like Charlie Drake

Arthur Keeling always had flat cap & scarf & Bill Crawshaw tall well made not much hair softly spoken. Hope this helps you remember. Cheers Mel
