JIMBO47:
I used to have diesel cars from early 80s a V reg Granada, various Toyota Cressida,Carina, then Skoda Felicia 1.9 diesel (the best of the lot fuelwise ave 60mpg) .
Even the latest diesel cars don’t get much more than 50 mpg certainly in the case of the Zafira at least. The real world comparison in that case usually being around 30+ mpg for the petrols and 50+ for diesels.Meaning around £600 saving in fuel over an average 10,000 miles per year and less in some cases involving lower mileages and that’s just comparing it with an old tech NA 1.8 petrol let alone something like a Ford 1.6 ecoboost which would probably almost if not match the diesel.
While LPG would probably increase fuel consumption v petrol by 20% but the fuel cost stands at more or less half the price of diesel. Also bearing in mind that petrols don’t have all the DPF unreliability among other issues to put up with.
On those figures it’s obvious that the government won’t need to increase the taxation regime by much to absolutely annihilate diesels even in commercial vehicles let alone cars.In addition to just banning the things from use in some circumstances regardless.Which is the point.
