Tbh I’m quite ■■■■ about poor spelling. In fact I actually take a marker pen into toilets and correct the spelling of the graffiti on the walls (doesn’t go down well when visiting friends houses though  )

Having said that, if I see poor spelling or grammar here it’s certainly not the end of the World to me, but it does irk me if I reckon that it’s just pure laziness causing it as opposed to bad education.

Does “World” warrant a capital letter there?
If you had said Earth then yes because it’s a name but I don’t think world should have a capital letter mid sentence should it?

Yes it should, I always capitalise World as it is a proper noun, well I hope I do, in case someone dredges up a post where I never and makes me look silly

I use my phone to post most of the time now and that has made my typos more frequent, the keypad is too small for my finger, that’s my excuse anyway

Sorry but I disagree, “world” is a common noun and should generally only be capitalized when it’s the first word in a sentence.

You’ve obviously spent too much time in America where people think there is only one world and it revolves around them :grimacing:

Its a fact intelligence and spelling ability are not linked , but in all reality it does help to be able to string something together if you have too !
Especially if you are trying to impress a client , customer or prospective employer, but it still doesn’t mean you can drive like a proper professional driver.

Just my humble opinion.

So what’s the difference between a common noun and a proper noun?

So is the jury still out on “world” then? I honestly have no idea but didnt think it warranted a capital letter mid sentence,

Tbh I’m not really sure about world v World. I could probably Google its ■■■ but it’s 30 degrees outside and lots of office totty around so I don’t care either.

I’ve never capitalised the word “world” unless it started a sentence, but have to admit I checked on Google before my previous post just in case I was wrong

“World” is a general name so it’s a common noun, whereas “Earth” for instance, is the name of a specific planet and therefore a proper noun.

“World” is not generally regarded as a specific place because it refers to the world as known by the human race ie, our planet and everything directly associated with it, we wouldn’t usually refer to Pluto for instance, as part of our world, it’s another world.

It’s like being back at school this is isn’t it

Ah I see  yes but I think I’ve learnt more on here than I ever did at school, I was too busy licking the windows

Pluto isn’t actually a planet, it is now called 134340 and was declassified when it was discovered we have bigger asteroids in our own back yard.

I stand corrected on that then, but 134340 is still worlds away from Earth

You can get cream for those…

I’ll get me coat

but didnt think it warranted a capital letter mid sentence,

Nor did I and still don’t

After Tachograph’s google reference, I checked it out and world is now world, not World in my world

Poor spelling and english I can just about live with, badly punctuated or unpunctuated ramblings I find unreadable and usually give up on.

I also find hard to read poorly executed or unedited quoting.
