STRAIGHT EIGHT:
Think she went on to work for Chris Brailsford ( who drove the truck for Tomlinsons) after Tomlinson’s wound up, then i think she went on to work for John Golding HeavyHaulage of Wooten-under-edge who loved American motors and ran a number of Kenworths, White’s and Macks in the 70s & 80s. She maybe with the All-American Circus now, but of that i cant be certain.
Hope that is of some help! Chris

Whites now? good.Had this one and didn’t know where to stick it and was always too scared to ask for fear of being told
Taken 1982 at the then Fine Fare on Tyneside (Team Valley ?) I’m sure someone will recognise it…jim

White Road Commander was usually referred to as a ‘Road Commode’ over here, never drove one so cannot say if the nickname was deserved or not.

Your not far wrong would be the answer to that! We head an RC2 on Heavyhaul (chelmsford) Ltd, it looked very pretty, but that was about it. We had the small-sleeper version, which was very cramped, it had a HUGE engine cover and a bunk that was about 1ft wide, the windscreens always cracked going over the smallest of bumps, the heater motor used to burn out about every 2 months, the air-operated wipers were useless, the steering wheel was so big you used to rap your knuckles on the quarter-light every time you turned left or right, getting from seat to bunk was worse than in an FL1O, and with leather-covered everything it was a cold cab in the winter.
Performance-wise it had a 3406 CAT lump, which when it was fresh, would pull like a train! but the longevity of the CAT was not good and it needed regular re-builds. Nothing wrong with the box, it was a Fuller Roadranger 10-speed and worked well with the big CAT. The back end on ours was double-drive bogie borrowed from a Volvo and the front axle was modded to run on spiggott mounted Volvo rims.
The reg of this WHITE was GSP 177W and was 1st registed in Scotland, Heavyhaul bought it in 87 to replace a shagged-out F89, the driver on it at the time loved it!, even though it used to ‘sledge’ terribly on corners and it had so little steering-lock you had to shunt to get round some roundabouts!!! She was kept for about 5yrs and replaced with an Intercooler F12 in 92, dont know where it ended up, and havent seen it since. Like i say, nice to look at, but not as nice to drive!

When you were in Poole do you remember my mate Hughie Hill ,s white White Road commander ,he used to pull for GBE and before that used to do Romania with it, it was written off by an out of control BRS rental wagon. The last time I saw it was in Southern Trucks yard as scrap.

Seeing as there are now a few Whites on this post,I thought I’d put this one on. Taken in 1988 in france, does anyone know anything about it? I put it up on a different post but it drew a blank.Someone must recognize the old girl.
Cheers Jamie
