This could in part be resolved by double signing IE speed limit for cars & speed limit for > 7.5 t.
This would highlight that different vehicles have different legal maximums and offer scope to up the > 7.5 t limit on good single carraige ways.

There’s already something similar to this, it’s called The Highway Code.
But, let’s face it, who seriously gives a ■■■■ what a car driver behind thinks, if they don’t know we can only do 40mph MAX (I’m lucky to achieve 40 sometimes) and they’re getting frustrated because they’re incapable of performing a simple overtake manoeuvre, that’s their problem tbh
There was an e-petition for this in 2012 and it got 17 signatures. This one has 54 so at that rated of increase you should have the 100k required in another 500 years of so
It’s a lost cause, give if up and move on.

I’ve not signed it, too many truckers overtake me on a daily basis when I’m doing 40mph on a single carriageway.I’m currently carrying around 28t of milk which makes me pretty close to 44t but with the majority of it being liquid in lots of bottles that are in cages with wheels, not exactly a description that fits your average race car.
I have to take roundabouts a little slower, and it takes me a while to get upto any speed and I lose it again on hills (but gain a little on down hills) and I’m often passed in these situations as well.
40mph is quick enough for me, even though I’m doing a lot of A5 single carriageway driving which is a pretty decent road by all accounts, but it’s still got side streets, layby’s, tractors etc.
Increasing the speed limit for all trucks will just make more trucks peeved when they’re behind me and I’m still doing 40mph
But you said you are already getting ‘‘too many’’ trucks overtaking you so really it would make no difference ?
Even if they upped it to 50 mph, it doesn’t mean drivers have to drive at 50. Just means those who want to or have the capabilities to progress can do so legally.
All i see on a daily basis with a 40mph limit on our A roads is complete hassle, queues for miles, frustrated drivers and risk taking.
Trouble is that a lot of vehicles are not equiped with a highway code : -) .

Right, so at the moment on 40mph roads trucks already doing 55mph +/-…
So, as I said before, why would they increase the limit, we’re not really causing an issue worth their attention, and when poor they can put (s)cameras on popular roads and cash in.
If all truck drivers did the limit, and caused enough mayhem then the public in cars might petition for the limit to be increased.
But, tbh, the way some truck drivers drive, like the limit is the speed and there’s no alternative, tailgaiting a car that dares do 49mph through roadworks etc, I wouldn’t let these idiots go any quicker.

They won’t up the limit to 50mph because without introducing zero tolerance policing this would mean trucks could pretty much drive flat out within the current policing thresholds.

40 mph is fast enough for a 44 tonne waggon on any road
Didn’t know the Mayor of London came on here
Not signed. Wot’s the hurry? Up the limit to 50 and you’ll still have the usual suspects up your arris trying to get by. It will just make the smashes that little bit more spectacular!

Mine’s only 32. Anyway from what I’ve got today, I’ll never get everything done. Then it’ll be a welfare issue because my tea will be cold later, and also a safety issue when the plate flies across the room.

Only 99,941 to go before 21st of this month … not going to happen
why do some drivers want the speed limit raised, is it so they can complete there days work legally, if so the dopey planner will lump more on you as you can now go faster from A to B, from what I read on here some drivers are on a low rate of pay and rely on extra hours to bump there money up, (do your planned route quicker and now get less money) sounds like a real winner for the drivers this one lads.
There are some roads which could be raised to 50 mph and these i would say are the major trunk roads or by-passes which are generally long and straight such as the A361 in Devon or the A303 and i feel cars might not be so desperate to overtake if hgv’s could be allowed to go 50 instead of 40.
I agree that the 40mph limit should be raised to 50 (bearing in mind, its a speed Limit, NOT a target)
There would be fuel saving and environment benefits as the engines, at 50mph, would be running at nearer their optimum revs for fuel efficiency. I believe it would also reduce driver fatigue, which can be induced more readily when driving longish distances at a relatively low speed.
Doing 40mph on some single carriageway A roads can often lead to impatience for the following drivers (lgv’s and cars) which can lead to potentially dangerous overtaking manouvres.
Raising the limit at least gives the lgv driver a wider choice of what speed he/she wishes to drive at.
No government will ever have the balls to raise a speed limit for HGVs, certainly not on the back of a petition signed by biased truck drivers. This e-petition is a complete waste of time.
The only thing that might make the government think about it, is if it was causing significant traffic issues and Joe Public started whinging about it on a large scale. I can’t say I have ever met anybody that complains about being stuck behind trucks on SC’s as it’s so rare, I have met plenty who complain about being stuck behind overtaking trucks on dual carriageways though…
As has been said many times, the only way to campaign against the limit is for all drivers to rigidly stick to the 40 limit everywhere, causing all the inevitable tail backs. This is never going to happen though in a million years, so lets just forget about the whole thing for goodness sake.

Come on, everybody knows that the vast majority of drivers (car & truck) do treat limits as a target & often think its perfectly reasonable to go 5-10mph quicker. The 20mph limits you see in residential areas these days are there with this in mind - better to have someone speeding at 25 than doing 35.
Set the speed limit to 50 for trucks on SC’s and it will just become normal for drivers to ride on the limiter everywhere. Not a good idea imo. This shouldn’t be the case, but it would be. ‘Cracking on’ rules for many.
Best solution I think, would be to keep the 40 limit for where it’s needed but do a review of all SC’s and a introduce a new road sign meaning “HGV limits don’t apply”. Then just put these signs on all the suitable roads. Simple, but probably too simple.

Its this sort of attitude from others that also causes me to shrug my shoulders and think ‘why even bother’ !!

You’ve got to know when your ■■■■■■■ in the wind.
Agree with Wayneld the problem isn’t the 40 mph ( which i think should stay) it is the line of car drivers who will not overtake and then someone who does has to " queue hop " in and out to get by them all. IMO sometimes we do not help ourselves in the public eye by sitting 2 or 3 trucks in convoy so the cars cant overtake as the length of 3 vehicles with no apparent pull in is too much for them.
This week I have done eleven loads. This means I have driven a grand total of 44 miles on dual carriageway (2 mile stretch x 11 return trips). The rest is on A, B and unclassified roads. I am definitely for raising the speed limit.
